Alternatively, EPA have a proven track record of “growing our own” Biomedical Scientist’s and this position is suitable for candidates that have an IBMS accredited degree and are seeking a laboratory based position to complete their registration portfolio for HCPC registration.

Working as part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance, based at the James Paget University Hospital Great Yarmouth, you will have the opportunity to work as part of a cutting edge Laboratory encompassing Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Transfusion and Andrology.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Multidisciplinary Blood Science Spoke Laboratory at the James Paget University Hospital. The successful candidate will ideally be multidisciplinary trained in Hematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry. If you have an interest in training as a multidisciplinary Biomedical Scientist, we would welcome your application.

You will be joining a friendly vibrant team in a recently refurbished laboratory. The Laboratory operates Abbott Alinity Haematology and Chemistry analysers, Werfen TOPS coagulation and Immucor NEO Blood Grouping analysers, with Grifols analysers currently under evaluation to replace the Neo’s in Transfusion.

Knowledge of laboratory based computers, audits, SOPs, ISO standards and quality is a requirement. Essential qualities we require are an ability to work within a team, good communication skills, good technical proficiency and an ability to work unsupervised. You must be able to work under pressure and be able to meet deadlines, be flexible and adaptable and show that you are motivated and willing to develop your knowledge and skill.

Clinical Scientific & Management Responsibilities:
  • Communicates complex service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers.
  • Answers telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provide information that is complex concerning methodologies and service requirements, seeking advice as required.
  • Assists in explaining results and reassures the users that the information is correct after seeking advice when results do not agree with clinical presentation.
  • Manages own work on a daily basis in specialised services. Responsible for processing both urgent and routine work to maintain routine turnaround times in line with Trust and Service polices.
  • Maintains as part of a team, complex specialist analytical equipment on a daily basis and assess fitness for clinical use referring to senior staff as appropriate.
  • Responsible for the efficient use of expensive tests and high value analysers.
  • Able to run daily test procedures on all methodologies to include calibration and quality control testing and refer to senior staff to sign off as fit for clinical use.
  • Fault find equipment and analyser function after formal in-house training.
  • Follows policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust.
  • Assist service engineers to repair and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of standards as necessary for Healthcare Scientist (Biomedical Scientist (BMS)) Band 5 to achieve and maintain UKAS accreditation.
Responsibilities for Laboratory Information Service:
  • Assists in managing and maintaining specialised databases in laboratory computer systems and patient storage databases.
  • Responsible for inputting and amending patient data and results, which includes other colleagues work.
  • Trained to use, retrieve and store patient information on several patient database systems for access by external and internal users.
  • Trained to operate and manage software databases on complex clinical analysers.
Research, evaluation & service development:
  • Use research & development protocols on daily basis to provide statistical presentations of internal quality control (QC) to assess equipment performance in line with QC rules (e.g. Westgard).
  • Assist in the evaluation and development of methods to improve the service and patient care diagnostic tests.
  • Investigate abnormal and unusual results by recognised research & development protocols and or audit to explain the anomalies, seeking advice as appropriate.
  • Assisting in the development of specialised services to include new and emerging technologies and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Staff development and training responsibilities:
  • Assist in the education and training of Medical staff, Clinical Scientists, other BMS, Trainee BMS, MLA’s and visiting students as required within their specialised area.
  • Demonstrate on going competence to practice by attending courses, lectures, mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and other training activities.
  • Train in all specialised services according to the staff rotation programme.
  • To keep up to date with SOPs.
  • To actively participate in an Annual Personal Development review (PDR).
  • To receive appropriate training and maintain competency to the level required for Band 5 staff in order to support all services within the Blood Sciences Laboratory (Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion)
Health & Safety:
  • Provide safety supervision & training for junior members of staff and actively promote safe working practices in all areas of the laboratory service.
  • To abide by the Health and Safety Code of Practice for the Service.
  • To ensure the application of Trust policies where applicable to the Pathology Services.
  • To participate in an annual Health and Safety review.
  • Any other duties as required by the Blood Sciences Network Manager or the Chief BMS
