About the Organisation:

Public Health Scotland is a new organisation, set up to improve the lives of people in Scotland, to reduce health inequalities that persist in many of our communities. It’s an exciting time to join the organisation, with PHS at the forefront of Scotland’s efforts to tackle Coronavirus and its implications across society.

The Post:

We are seeking to recruit a Healthcare Scientist Advanced (Health Protection) to work in the Environmental Public Health (EPH) Team. The EPH Team supports efforts to minimise adverse health impacts caused by exposure to environmental hazards including climate change, air quality, and other environmental hazards through the provision of specialist advice, operational support, guidance and training.

The post holder will support consultants or senior scientific staff in the provision of specialised information, advice and support to stakeholders. The specific requirements of the post will also include contributing to environmental hazard, exposure and risk assessment, critical analysis of published scientific literature and other published evidence and data in relation to specific environmental hazards, and supporting acute environmental incident response. The post holder may also provide support to teams across PHS.

The Candidate:

You will have a primary degree in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field with a post graduate qualification in a scientific or health-related discipline (or equivalent experience), ideally with experience in environmental exposure and risk assessment or epidemiology relating to non-infectious hazards in the physical environment. You should also have a qualification or demonstrable training/experience in Health Protection, Public Health, Toxicology or a related subject.

We are looking for applicants with an enthusiastic and flexible approach. You will have a proven track record as a team player be able to work to a high standard, often to short timescales, with excellent planning and organisational skills. You will also have highly developed analytical skills, including familiarity with the review and critical appraisal of scientific evidence and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Location and Working Pattern:

Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Central Quay, Glasgow.

Please note that PHS is currently in the process of relocating from Central Quay, Glasgow to Bothwell Street, Glasgow from early 2024.

PHS operate a hybrid working model with a mixture of working at home and days in the office each week.

The post is full time, 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday and we operate flexi time.

During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
