Job description

Due to an expansion of our department, we have an opportunity for a Health Care Assistant to join our committed and motivated team at the acute stroke unit at the Royal Derby Hospital.

It consists of an 8 bedded hyper acute stroke unit and 30 bedded acute stroke ward.

We are supported by Matron, 11 Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses, and a Clinical Educator Team who will support and provide opportunities for training and development.

If you have the drive, determination, and a can-do attitude, who can work well as part of a team whilst delivering the best possible care to our patients we would like to hear from you.

We are looking for a Healthcare Assistant who is reliable, hardworking and who is committed to providing excellent patient care. You will be expected to provide a wide range of duties to ensure our patients receive the best care possible.

Shifts consist of long days and nights.

Ideally you will have previous experience in a care setting, with an NVQ or equivalent in Health and Social care, be an attentive listener and have a flexible approach to working.

Numeracy and literacy skills are essential.

Assist clinical staff by undertaking some basic clinical procedures specifically related to personal care e.g. urine specimens, emptying urinary catheter bags, and removal of cannulae.

Additional skills such as taking blood will be available to learn and competency packages to complete.

Work in an effective and efficient way utilising appropriate Trust and directorate policies, procedures and guidelines.

Communicate effectively by giving and receiving information so that appropriate action can be taken.

Maintain own competence by continuously developing own skills and knowledge in accordance with agreed personal development plan.

Record accurately and report on the patient’s condition by undertaking basic monitoring skills

Contribute effectively as a member of the Multi-professional team building appropriate relationships.

Promote and deliver high quality personal care and report problems to a senior member of staff.

At all times ensure that own actions support and promote equality, diversity and the rights of patients, the public and colleagues within the health care environment.

Support the effective use of available resources in an efficient way.

Identify hazards and act accordingly to promote the health and safety of patients, the public and staff in the health care environment.

Maintain a safe environment by following infection control policies and procedures at all times.

Complete all appropriate documents in a clear, accurate and timely way, participating in reporting processes as necessary.

Contribute to effective working in a changing environment as services develop.
