Job description

We are looking for calm, creative, flexible and efficient Health Care Assistants who can understand the needs of patients and visitors, whose priority is to deliver high quality patient care. As a team member, you will work collectively with colleagues to achieve the Trust’s core values. You should be able to communicate clearly and be keen to learn within the scope of this role.

The role involves shift work including full days, nights and weekends so ability to work these shifts is essential.

Day Shift: 07:30am - 20:00pm Night Shift: 19:30pm - 08:00am

Chartwell Inpatient Unit and Chartwell Outpatient’s Unit are looking for Band 2 health care support workers to join our friendly team. If you are a dynamic individual who enjoys a challenge and would like to join a team who are passionate about providing high quality care to their patients, then we want to hear from you.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and committed, having the ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team. You need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. We require individuals who are forward thinking, well organised and with a positive attitude towards flexibility and change.

This is a full-time post within the Chartwell Department at the Princess Royal University Hospital part of Kings College NHS Foundation Trust, but the successful candidate will be required to rotate throughout the Chartwell areas when necessary to provide administrative support.

Job Summary

As a Health Care Assistant you will be supporting the clinical staff in the provision of safe effective care to meet the needs of patients and their families. As part of your role you will be assisting with maintaining high standards of quality care, patient safety and cleanliness of the wards. You will ensure adequate stock levels are maintained and equipment is stored safely.

To assist under supervision in the delivery of nursing care in liaison with the multidisciplinary team.

To assist with clinical duties to ensure the effective running of the ward/department.

To maintain own personal development with support from ward/departmental manager.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • To assist patients with activities of daily living whilst encouraging independence, as appropriate
  • To monitor and record patient’s clinical observations, as requested by a Registered Nurse
  • To assist with patient nutritional needs – eating, drinking, menu selection, meal delivery and special diets according to the individual patient’s needs
  • To assist in the maintenance of up to date, comprehensive and accurate records in accordance with current legal requirements
  • To assist in the admission and discharge of patients including any necessary risk assessments
  • To escort patients and families to other departments within the hospital as required
  • After appropriate training, to assist in the collection of specimens including blood samples
  • To participate in maintaining standards of hygiene, cleanliness and infection control, reporting problems as appropriate
  • To ensure that equipment is clean at all times, stored safely when not in use and report faults as appropriate
  • To assist in setting up and preparing patient areas appropriately to the clinical area
  • To ensure that stock levels of linen, sterile supplies and stationery are maintained at all times in conjunction with the senior sister/ward receptionist.
  • To assist in the maintenance and safekeeping of patients property in line with Trust policy
  • To assist ward staff with general collection/delivery of items necessary to ensure effective operational management of ward/department

Customer Care / Administration
  • To ensure that all patients and relatives are welcomed and orientated to the ward environment
  • To assist with the care of distressed or bereaved relatives
  • To assist with clerical and ward administrative duties, including data management, photocopying, transporting of equipment/data/ paperwork to other departments
  • To provide clear and effective information and communication, both verbally and in writing. Promptly referring enquiries to the relevant person
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times, in and out of the hospital environment
  • To demonstrate an awareness of the different cultural, ethnic and religious needs
Personal and Professional Development
  • To adhere to, and work within the National Code of Conduct for clinical support workers at King’s College Hospital
  • To be able to identify with support your own development needs, completing a competency document and learning objectives within a specified time frame and as agreed by manager
  • To ensure own attendance at mandatory study days and training (BLS, manual handling etc.) as required by ward/departmental manager
  • To update skills and knowledge as required by the Trust
  • To actively participate in annual individual performance review
Management
  • To manage an agreed workload with supervision and support from colleagues and senior staff
  • To work within and support the multidisciplinary team, contributing ideas toward future developments
  • To maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all areas within the care group and associated clinical areas within the Trust
  • To participate in reflection and or clinical supervision sessions as provided
  • To observe personal and collective responsibility for resource management
  • To observe a general duty of care for the health, safety and wellbeing of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital
  • To be responsible with others for any specific risk management associated with the post, reporting and taking appropriate actions as necessary
General

Data Protection, Confidentiality and Access to Health Records

All information concerning patients/clients and other staff members must be treated as confidential and you must adhere to the policies related to this subject. As a Band 2 Health Care Assistant if you contribute to patients’ health records you are expected to be familiar with, and adhere to, the Trust’s Care Records Policy and accompanying documentation. You are advised to compile records on the assumption that they are accessible to patients in line with the Data Protection Act 1998 and you should be aware that patients’ records throughout the Trust will be subject to regular audit. You have a responsibility to ensure that patient records are maintained efficiently and that confidentiality is protected in line with the Trust’s policies.

As a Band 2 Health Care Assistant you are likely to have access to computerised data systems and you are required to obtain, process and/or use information held in these systems in a fair and lawful way. You must hold data only for the specific registered purpose and not to use or disclose it in any way incompatible with such purpose. Only disclose data only to authorised persons or organisations as instructed.
