We are looking for an experienced Health Intelligence Analyst to join our newly expanded Business Intelligence team, initially on a secondment basis with the potential to become permanent at the end of the period. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a forward thinking, proactive group of analysts as we expand our remit within the organisation.
Reporting to the Health Intelligence Manager, the Health Intelligence Analyst will support the development of a Population Health Management and Health Inequalities focused reporting and analytical capability workstream. They will support the creation, maintenance and updating of reports using Power BI and other platforms, and using SharePoint to store, organize, share, and access these reports. There will also be opportunities to use advancing technologies including machine learning, programming tools and reporting layers.

This role is part of the South East London (SEL) Analytics team within the Planning directorate of the ICB, and is responsible for the delivery of the Analytics and Business intelligence function to SEL ICB. The post-holder will report to the Health Intelligence Manager.
The team is responsible for analytics and business intelligence provision to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders across South East London both within SEL ICS, including place-based teams, GP Primary Care Networks and acute providers, and also across London, within a changing NHS landscape. The ICB’s key partner organisations include Intelligence Solutions for London (ISL), which provides a central analytical function that supports all London ICS’s, by delivering data and application solutions, the NECS (North of England) DSCRO (Data Services for Commissioners), which securely processes and disseminates data on behalf of ICS’s, and regional and national teams within NHS England.
Health Intelligence Analysts will be expected to liaise closely with colleagues and the above partner organisations and stakeholders.
The South East London Integrated Care System (ICS) brings together the health and care partners that serve our vibrant and highly diverse populations resident in the London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark - our Places.
Our partnership brings together six local authorities, over 200 general practices (operating within 35 Primary Care Networks), Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS FT, King’s College Hospital NHS FT, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, South London and the Maudsley Mental Health FT and Oxleas FT. Importantly, the ICS seeks to be connected to the communities we serve (circa 1.92m residents) and work with the widest possible range of community, voluntary and third sector groups and organisations in each borough. The reach of our NHS provider portfolios extends beyond the borders of the ICS, across London, the south of England and nationally for some services.
The South East London ICB is the NHS management unit of the ICS. It is accountable both to NHS England and to the South East London Integrated Care Partnership (ICP).
Duty and Responsibilities
With experience of use of information across the NHS, you will be able to extract data using SQL and have good Excel skills to enable high quality analysis and presentation of data. Knowledge of creating reports in Power BI would be an advantage but not essential. Knowledge of designing and maintaining automated/advanced reporting systems using VBA, Python, DAX, R, or other languages would be an advantage but not essential. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills to enable you to present results and conclusions of analysis to stakeholders within the ICB.
- Work closely with the Senior Health Intelligence Analysts to assist with the development of a Population Health Management and Health Inequalities focused reporting and analytical capability workstream.
- Support SEL ICB in data modelling, analytical system development and other such collaboration projects developed jointly with ISL and other key stakeholders in London and national programmes. Support data assurance, validation and systems harmonisation projects working with the ISL and NECS teams to achieve improvements in technical processes and a consistent and comprehensive London-wide approach to data assurance processes that meets SEL local requirements.
- To support the Senior Health Intelligence Analyst on projects using advancing technologies including machine learning, programming tools and reporting layers.
- Provide Business Intelligence support to Contract Management of allocated Providers, including BI input into monthly contract meetings.
- Maintain and cascade up to date knowledge of current NHS Data Dictionary and Data Models.
- Work with the NECS and ISL Systems and Delivery teams to maintain and review systems once established to enable the effective and timely monitoring, assessment, and management of SEL activity, assist in the development of internal databases and utilisation of benchmarking comparative tools.
- Work with system partners within the South East London ICS to facilitate their effective contribution to whole system development work, specifically to enable development of Population Health Management systems that will be used by all partners in South East London.
- Assist in maintaining collaboration with analytical delivery partners such as ISL, NECS DSCRO, and local and regional digital leads.
- Support the Senior Health Intelligence Analysts in providing expertise, modelling, and benchmarking to
- enable ICB population spend and activity to be cut on the basis of geography age and disease to support whole population place-based planning.
- support new contracting approaches, including capitated budgets, outcome based planning and integrated contraction, including but not limited to primary care, planned care spanning acute and community services, unplanned care including 111/999 activity and mental health services.
- Provide analytical support to enable a more holistic approach to be taken to the understanding of drivers related to the use of health care services and their performance.
- Support with analytics as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to planning, ICB programmes of transformation and ongoing support to enable the effective implementation of service changes, contract developments and annual Operating Plan and assurance process.
- Work with the Senior Health Intelligence Analysts to assist with SEL’s Business Intelligence Reporting development workstream, continuously reviewing and adapting the portfolio of automated and manual reports available to meeting changing requirements and priorities.
- Create, maintain, and update reports using Power BI and other platforms, and using SharePoint to store, organise, share, and access these Reports.
- Support the existing Subject Matter Expert (SME) in assigned areas of responsibility, including ICB and Provider facing lead roles and BI work streams as assigned by line manager.
- Actively support own development and that of more junior team members to enable: • Delivery of day-to-day activities and projects.
- Supporting and empowering the drive and delivery of a range of projects
- Actively promoting a culture of continuous professional development and sharing of best practice across the whole team.
- Ensuring that robust and effective activity related monitoring information is provided as required on a regular basis, including tailoring data and information reports to meet the needs of different stakeholders both internal and external.
- Support SEL ICB reporting on agreed key national and local performance targets to be delivered through service contracts related o information provisions, including data quality. This will include providing data and analysis to effectively enable performance management of agreed information targets by contract managers.
- Input to the design and user testing of the data warehouse and performance reporting tools, which support the delivery of day-to-day business.
- Contribute to the development of self-service reports for ICB staff, both central and place-based, and support user access, training and development to enable them to make use of reporting functionality on a routine and ad-hoc basis.
