Job description

George Mackenzie House is a low secure unit providing development opportunity in the Recovery focused care of male and female adults experiencing difficulties associated with a range of acute often long-standing mental health illnesses.

The MDT assess and review all aspects of patient care seeking to use a holistic, collaborative approach in the preparation of individual care-plans where each patient is central to this process. We believe in truly collaborative care, support and positive risk taking.

Working on GMH will give the post holder the opportunity to practice a full range of core mental health care skills, physical care skills and to gain experience in risk assessment, management and recovery focused interventions.

You may be required to undertake and successfully complete the new national Care Certificate within a 12 weeks’ timeframe if you meet our criteria. You will receive full training and support and The Care Certificate sets out 15 national care standards that must be achieved by all health and social care staff to demonstrate that they have the skills and knowledge needed to provide safe and excellent quality of care. It is a foundation programme which can provide the first steps to career development within the NHS.

The post holder will provide support and care for service users with mental and physical health needs and to their carers within a multidisciplinary setting.

They will undertake assigned tasks under the general supervision of a registered nurse, including assisting in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

The post holder will be trained to ensure that issues of equality, diversity and rights are dealt with in accordance with good practice and legislation.

1. To promote a positive service user experience throughout their stay through proactive listening, being responsive to issues raised and through resolving issues and concerns raised by service users with colleagues and senior members of the team.
2. To be responsible for maintaining and conducting oneself in a professional manner towards service users, carers, colleagues and other agencies, at all times. To participate in working collaboratively with other Trust services and external agencies to provide seamless care for service users.
3. To support service users with activities of daily living, where and when required, and demonstrate empathy, dignity, respect and compassion at all times.
4. To understand the importance of relatives/carers contribution to care and conversing with the service users and their relatives/carers, establishing their needs and assisting them as necessary. Ensuring that any entries made by the post holder in the nursing notes are current, relevant and accurate, and the content will then be reported and validated by the registered nurse or relevant professional.
5. Working in partnership with the service user to access a range of activities and services to maintain their independence, promote their treatment & care needs.
6. Promoting health activities and lifestyle choices.
7. To promote and support registered staff with the physical health, comfort and wellbeing of service users, including physical observations and taking blood pressure, temperature and pulse under their guidance and supervision.
8. Empower service users by ensuring that they receive relevant information about their treatment, medication, available services, advocacy services, ward routines and safety procedures under the guidance of a registered nurse.
9. To work as part of the team and in accordance with relevant policies, guidance, procedures to maintained the security, safety of the ward for all, ensuring any points of concern are escalated to the registered nurse, senior team.
