Job description

Are you a compassionate, caring and considerate person? Are you looking for a sense of achievement in your job? Are you motivated by helping others? If so, then our Teams at University Hospitals Birmingham want to hear from you and others like you.

Our Team are united in bringing quality care to the people and communities within Birmingham and Solihull. To do this; we need like-minded people who want to work with us to deliver the very best care to our patients. The rest we can support you with.

As a Trust we invest in our applicants by ensuring you have a full induction to the Trust, on-going training and development along with a mentorship programme that will allow you access to colleagues and our School of Nursing who will support and guide you in your career aspirations. The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) role is the first step on a career ladder that could progress you to future career opportunities in nursing such as our well established Trainee Nursing Associate programme to become a Registered Nursing Associate or Registered Nurse Training.

Our Team have told us what they need from their employer- and we’ve listened. If you are looking for hours to fit around your family, or maybe your lifestyle does not fit the traditional 5 out of 7 -we can tailor our offering to you. This could be working school hours, weekends only or condensed hours. We would rather adapt our rosters to secure your talent.

As a HCA, your workload will be varied and with that challenging – however, being able to multitask in an efficient manner whilst maintaining a caring and helpful attitude underpins everything you do - to make a difference to your team and the patients that rely on us to care for them. You’ll have excellent communication and organisational skills and be confident to make judgements unaided. You will be able to work proactively to problem solve and work on your own initiative.

Within your role you will be asked to:

  • Greet all patients and visitors to the department with courtesy and compassion
  • Respond to all lines of enquiry in a professional manner and where required notifying colleagues or patients
  • Observe and report to the registered nurse all changes in a patient’s physical and psychological condition.
  • Support families and carers following a patient bereavement or when bad news has been shared
  • Assist and as required provide patients with personal care- assisting when in pain or distressed
  • Assist patients with feeding and drinking when necessary and maintaining patient notes.

With that, candidates will be required to have a good standard of Maths and English and will be required to present GCSE's certificates in Maths and English at grade C or above. If you are unable to present these you will be asked to attend an assessment on Saturday 18th March.

As part of the invaluable Team, you will be a reliable and committed candidate who will help ensure we are continually adhering to our Trust values of Kind Connected and Bold. We are confident we can offer you not just your next job but your next career.

In return you can expect a permanent contract with one of the NHS largest Trusts, a starting salary of £20,300 rising to £21,318, 27 days leave – increasing with service to 33 plus bank holidays, an invite to enrol on to the NHS pension along with other benefits such as overtime, shift allowance and access to NHS Staff Discounts such as the Blue light discount card.

If you are inspired by what we do and want to know more – please click apply and we’ll happily answer any questions you may have.
