Job description

We are looking for a motivated and experienced health care assistant worker to join the Clinical Genetics Department at Guy’s Hospital. The ideal candidate will be able to carry out a range of patient measurements and blood tests. In addition, ensuring the clinic rooms are stocked and ordering of stock when required. The health care assistant will also perform some clerical duties and support the administrative team, meaning basic IT skills and knowledge is required. The role will require you to use your own initiative and be flexible. You will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills and will be expected to maintain a high standard of care. Kindness and compassion are important attributes of this role as adults and children attend the clinical genetics department.

You will be expected to work Monday to Friday.

Clinical Duties
  • Provide excellent customer care skills to ensure patients come first.
  • Undertakes a range of delegated clinical care duties to deliver agreed plans of care, acting on own initiative.
  • To ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
  • Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individuals.
  • To act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
  • As directed collect specimens from patients e.g. bloods and record routine observations of weight and height, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate. Report any abnormalities and concerns to a Registered Nurse or Doctor within the department.
  • Recognise when patients are in pain and discomfort and report to a Registered Nurse or Doctor.
  • To respond appropriately to clinical emergencies to ensure the patient receives correct care.
  • To assist the Registered Nurse/Doctor/Genetic Counsellor with the safe handling and mobilisation of patients and when necessary to assist in the transportation of patients.
  • To chaperone patients to other clinical departments, following assessment by a Registered Nurse/Doctor/Genetic Counsellor to maintain patient safety.
  • Provide reassurance, support to patients, carers and family.
  • Ensure own actions help to maintain quality.
  • Establish and maintain communication with people on routine and operational matters.
  • To act always in a manner which, promotes positive working relationships and maintains the professional image of the Trust.
  • Understand and adhere to all Trust policies, guidelines and procedures in particular, Health and Safety, Fire Safety, Waste Management and Resuscitation policies to maintain a safe working environment for patients and staff.
  • Prepare the clinic rooms for the start of clinic, ensuring that all the required equipment is correctly stocked.
Housekeeping and Clerical Duties
  • Provide a welcoming and efficient reception service and to put patients at their ease.
  • Ensure that patients and visitors are well informed and that messages are communicated promptly.
  • To respond to patient requests for non-clinical information to improve communication.
  • Respond to enquiries in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Ensure all patients demographic details are checked with the patient and any amendments/corrections are made in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Assist in the organisation and running of the clinic by undertaking housekeeping and clerical/ administration duties as appropriate
  • To photocopy appropriate information to relevant disciplines
  • Maintain stock in treatment/pharmacy rooms and collect from storage when stocks are low and re-order when required.
  • To support the administrative team in the booking of clinics, answering of telephone calls and monitoring of emails.
Health and Safety
  • Report any accidents or incidents to a Registered Nurse, Doctor or Genetic Counsellor and complete the appropriate paperwork in line with Trust Policy.
  • Reporting and recording any potential hazards and equipment repairs.
  • Assist in the cleaning of clinical areas and equipment, ensuring that the area is clear of potential hazards, removing clinical waste and contaminated items to relevant collection areas.
  • To assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean clinical environment to reduce the risk of infection.
Infection Control
  • Accept personal responsibility and accountability for your infection prevention and control practice.
  • Ensure that you are familiar with, and comply with, all relevant policies.
  • Ensure that you receive mandatory updates in infection control.
  • Assist the Genetic Nurses in the completion of infection control audits.
  • Work with the Genetic Nurses to ensure that up the department remains up to date with infection control policies.
