Job description

The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights is seeking to recruit an outstanding human rights scholar in human rights as a Senior Research Fellow and Head of Research.
The successful candidate will engage in their own research, lead their own research projects and raise research funding both on their own behalf, and in order to develop the research community at the Institute. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with the Director and Head of Programmes of the Institute in relation to developing strategic planning of the Bonavero Institute. They will be supported by the Institute’s administration team who are members of the wider Research Support Team at the Faculty of Law, led by the Faculty’s Research Facilitator; be responsible for initiating and implementing long-term research programmes in the broad fields of human rights, the rule of law and constitutionalism that may be inter-disciplinary in character, and be expected to undertake supervision of a small number of graduate students and/or present a modest amount of graduate teaching in the field of human rights, understood broadly, in the Faculty of Law.
Applicants should have an outstanding record of published scholarship in fields relevant to human rights law or public law, commensurate with career stage; a doctorate in law in a field related to human rights, whether in public or public international law or an established record of accomplishment in research; an intellectually ambitious research agenda, likely to make a substantial contribution to human rights scholarship, with a plan to develop both their own research and the Bonavero community of scholars; sound knowledge of funding mechanisms, the processes that underpin research bids, and experience or demonstrated potential in obtaining research funding, as well as in developing and implementing collaborative funded research projects; sufficient teaching experience and depth of knowledge to teach and supervise graduate students in one or more fields relevant to human rights law or public law. Knowledge of key national and international research funders in the field and published research with a record of impact, defined as the effect on, change or benefit to society, public policy or services, beyond the academy is desirable.
The postholder will be based at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, Mansfield College, Oxford, OX1 3TF. The post is full-time and in principle permanent, although applications from suitable candidates who would prefer to work on a part-time or a secondment basis will be considered.
In cases of particular merit, the Faculty may make a recommendation to the Social Sciences Division for the conferral of the title of Professor or Associate Professor on appointment as appropriate.
