Investment plays an important role in the UK economy. In 2020 foreign businesses accounted for 22% of economic value added despite only accounting for 4% of local businesses.

The Investment Directorate encourages economic growth and a green industrial revolution across all parts of the UK through attracting and retaining inward investment. We deliver expert advice and support to international investors, identify and promote strategically important investment opportunities, enhance the competitiveness of the UK business environment and build world class investment capability across the department.

We are recruiting for a leadership role within the Investment Strategy and Operations division which is an excellent opportunity to be part of an engaging, inclusive and motivated Deputy Directorate. As Head of Investment Services, Planning and Capability, you will lead a team of approximately ten FTE responsible for shaping the future of DIT’s investment operations, ensuring it is set-up to focus on landing high-value, high-impact investment into the UK. This will include coordinating and supporting the performance management and planning capabilities across DIT’s investment directorate, managing delivery of our contracted support services and overseeing business management and training across the directorate.

The role would suit a self-starter who is comfortable leading a team through ambiguity—motivated by managing a number of priorities at the heart of Investment operations. Job description

You will be responsible for the following three core delivery priorities:

  • Performance and Planning: Manage and enhance strategic planning and performance management across the Department’s investment operations, including through leading on DIT’s investment Outline Delivery Plan and business planning processes, managing DG and Director led delivery and performance boards, and working with DIT Analysis to enhance DIT’s investment performance framework and reporting. You will become a trusted adviser to leaders of DIT’s regional, sectoral, and overseas investment teams, supporting and challenging them to deliver on their plans and working with them to overcome challenges to performance and implement the Investment Strategy and shift to supporting high impact investment.
  • Managing service and capability delivery: You will oversee management of DIT’s Investment Service Team (IST) contract IST deliver a wide range of support services to investors, local partners, and DIT teams. You will build strong relationships IST Chief Operating Officer, service users, DIT Commercial and the Transformation Programme to drive maximum value from the contract and prepare for transition to a new service delivery model in 2023. You will also oversee the procurement and management of five intelligence subscriptions that enable IST to deliver research and lead generation support. And you will set direction for the development and delivery of the Investment Academy, Investment Masterclasses and Delivery Sector Knowledge programmes.
  • Business management: You will provide assurance to the Investment Director that robust financial, risk and issue, and continuity plans are in place across the Directorate’s six divisions.

The role will require line management of approximately 10 FTEs. The post holder will be responsible for building and developing their team.

Hybrid working

The role will be based in either Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

  • You will have previous experience of building senior relationships and managing stakeholders to deliver project aims.
  • You will have experience developing solutions to operational challenges.
  • You will have the ability to analyse evidence to inform decision making.
