The Head of Operations for the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) goup will work with the SVP of AIML, the leadership team and their supporting functions to drive strategic planning and operational delivery of the group. They are accountable for leading the AIML operations team, which compromises of various functions such as scientific communications, internal communications, data and risk management and operational oversight of the AIML team. This role collaborates closely with the leadership team to ensure seamless operations and integration with the broader GSK support, internal stakeholders, and adherence to internal AIML processes. Additionally, the operations project management team are responsible for tracking and aligning with quarterly OKRs, sprints, larger objectives, and overall progress.
This role will be based at St Pancras Square in Kings Cross London, which is the UK hub for AIML. The other AIML locations include San Francisco, (where the SVP is based), Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle, Zurich, Heidelberg, and Tel Aviv.
The ideal applicant will have spent time in startups and technology companies and have the cultural and management acumen to engage with and interact with the larger GSK organization. They will fit well with the GSK AIML culture and be adaptable to working across multiple time zones and location. Ideal traits for this role include a familiarity of software development and the machine learning life cycle, coupled with a genuine enthusiasm and preferably a background in biomedical science. A strong desire for fast paced environments and a commitment to flawless execution are also high valued characteristic.
They will act as “thought and execution partner” to the SVP and provide appropriate challenge to improve delivery and effectiveness and will equip leaders with wise counsel and practical, pragmatic support, bringing excellent judgment, emotional intelligence, and relevant experience to bear on a constantly changing set of challenges and opportunities. Additionally, they will provide effective operations expertise and work closely in collaboration with the other key senior operations directors supporting the RDLT members to ensure cohesion and alignment to drive delivery on the R&D key priorities.
The Head of AIML Operations will serve as a key member of the leadership team and will lead a high performing operations team. In addition, this role will:
- Lead and empower the operations team to identify and take ownership of all operational processes simplifying the processes for the AIML group
- Have the experience and ability to be delegated accountability from the SVP of AIML for certain operational, strategic and risk activities.
- Using coaching and mentoring, drive high performance delivery within the operational team and provide development opportunities to enable each team member to excel in their role
- Partners with Finance to deliver on budget plan and be overall accountable for the operational budget including the >£10M external data team budget
- Accountable for developing a communication strategy and implementing this to ensure the objectives and progress of the AIML team are clearly understood by the rest of the organisation, including the GSK.ai external website
- Partners with Human Resources (HR) to deliver on the people goal, enabling the HR strategy within the group
- Partner with CGA to ensure there is a clear external strategy for the SVP of AIML and the leadership team
- Partners with peers in Research, Development, MDS and Vx to respond to emerging cross-enterprise requests and mandates and align activities across R&D groups where synergies enable increased efficiency to deliver department objectives
- Orchestrate complex initiatives and activities to support across the team and align activities across R&D groups where synergies enable increased efficiency to deliver department objectives
- Ensure the AIML has the appropriate processes in place to enable efficient ways of working with third parties and collaborators
- Supports the LT to build meaningful yearly objectives with aligned measurements and tracking aligned to RDLT goals.
- Partners with leadership team to develop and facilitate the execution of the team's culture and engagement plan.
- Partnership with CSO office to facilitate execution of R&D strategy
- Cultivate and build strong, positive relationships with other R&D teams, Business Units, and key stakeholders
- Accountable for the Risk strategy and ensure the AIML group is compliant aligning with enterprise risk council including leading Audits and Risk related KPIs
- Work with the EHS to ensure AIML are compliant with safety regulations

Basic Qualifications:

- Software development and machine learning experience from a startup/technology company
- Degree level in Life Sciences, Business, or other relevant areas
- Strong leadership skills to build a cohesive, high-performing team, and to attract, recruit, maintain and develop top quality talent
- Proven exceptional delivery of leading operational activities within a fast moving and ambiguous environment
- Deep understanding of R&D and the key priorities and focus areas to help deliver on the R&D objectives

Strong scientific acumen with the ability to understand the key objectives of the AIML team and how they impact the wider GSK goals
- Strong interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence to be able to work across multiple and diverse stakeholders
- Ability to positively influence others and work across a matrix and work closely with RDLT and GLT members
- Excellent interpersonal, motivational and presentation skills are required alongside the demonstrated ability to function successfully in a team-oriented environment
- Strong logistics and organization skills and the aability to operate independently and multitask, dealing with information at a variety of levels on large number of projects
- Consistent attention to detail, ability to deliver to demanding deadlines and at the highest quality
- Demonstrated learning agility to manage complexity and ambiguity
- Understanding of Risk Management in GSK, the application of the Internal Control Framework which includes risk identification, diagnosis, and monitoring
- Track record of success working in highly complex, global, and/or multi-disciplinary structures with high accountability and multiple lines of reporting
- Broad understanding of pharmaceutical industry, key challenges, business processes and technical environments
- Coaching and mentoring experience
Preferred Qualifications:

- MS/PhD in Life Science or engineering, MBA
- Deep Knowledge to support complex science functions
- Experience working in AIML or similar
- Project management and Change management practitioner
