Job Introduction

BBC Children in Need are looking for a Head of Marketing and External Communications to take our recently refreshed our much-loved brand forward as we continue to ensure we are seen as relevant and contemporary and are able to successfully engage our target audiences. The role is permanent and the location is flexible with Hybrid working.

We are moving from being an organisation who shows up once a year in November to an organisation that is ‘always on’ and uses our unique platform to celebrate and stand up for children and young people.

We’re looking for an energetic, ambitious and strategic thinker who will help us to deliver our new organisational strategy through the re-imagination of our marketing and external communications activity.

BBC Children in Need is the BBC’s UK Charity, and exists to make a positive difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. As well as continuing the evolution of our brand and communications, this role will be instrumental in working across the organisation in co-developing a new advocacy position and will lead on the execution of this position through behaviour change campaigns and influential media activity.

Strategy and planning

  • Designing, developing and coordinating the implementation of a charity-wide integrated marketing and external communications strategy

PR, Communications and influencing

  • Providing strategic advice on complex and sensitive issues and strategic leadership to the Executive team and other senior colleagues on high profile communications activity, making recommendations to the chief executive and board where required.

Marketing, Brand & Campaigns

  • Leading the implementation of our newly refreshed brand, establishing CiN as modern, effective and ‘for me’ with our target audiences of 16-24 year olds and young families

Celebrity & Talent Engagement

  • Developing and establishing a talent strategy which delivers against our charitable ambition and creates impact for children and young people
Are you the right candidate?

You will have extensive leadership experience within the Marketing and Communications field and be able to demonstrate a track record of

  • Providing strategic, cross organisational leadership on all areas of external communications, digital marketing and brand
  • Providing leadership to Marketing and External Communications team, communicating the vision, strategic direction and objectives of Marketing and External Communications and how that supports the over-arching Marcomms Strategy and Above & Beyond Trust strategy
  • Encouraging a culture of common purpose, shared values, corporate identity and commitment to collaborative working

Experience and skills required

  • Demonstrable experience of holding a senior role leading marketing PR & communications/brand/digital in an organisation or division
  • Experience of developing and delivering organisation wide PR & external communications, brand, marketing and advocacy strategies
  • Experience of leading on behaviour change campaigns and understanding of public affairs and advocacy
  • A high level of interpersonal skills sufficient to enable the post holder to establish and maintain credibility and effective working relationships with and influence a wide range of contacts – e.g. journalists, senior management, talent
  • Experience of delivering change for children and young people through marketing, communications and influencing is desirable

Package Description

Band: E
Contract type: Permanent
Location: Hybrid Working with travel to London and Manchester on a regular basis

Salary: £52,890 - £65,000 (Plus London Weighting if applicable)

  • This role is aligned to Head of Marketing, Band E in the BBC’s Career Path Framework. We will expect to offer appropriately within the above pay range depending on the individual skills and experience of the successful candidate.
