Job description

To manage the Group’s approach to its transferable risk. This will involve gaining and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of that transferable risk and leading the thinking as to the extent to which that risk should be transferred to insurers, whether external or through our captive insurance company, or retained. Working with our insurance brokers, the role will then be responsible for executing the procurement, and maintenance, of relevant insurance policies in order to ensure efficient, effective and consistent coverage across the Group.


Understanding our transferable risk landscape


  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the Group’s insurable risk landscape
  • Work with our regions, markets and functions to develop and maintain this understanding
  • Maintain this level of understanding as the Group continues to expand its footprint, and the nature of its activities
  • Demonstrate, and maintain, an understanding of the external insurance markets as they adapt to changing risk landscapes
  • Lead the Group’s thinking on the extent to which our transferable risks should be ceded to the insurance markets and, if so, in what form

Managing our Group Insurance programme


  • Working with our insurance brokers, procure cost-effective risk transfer solutions that provide a consistent level of coverage across our Group companies in the 40+ markets in which we operate
  • Develop and maintain efficient processes for the provision of information and data to our insurance brokers, and insurers, to support inception and renewal of policies
  • Provide day to day management of the Group Insurance programme acting as the bridge between our insurers, and insurance brokers, and our Group companies that are the beneficiaries of our insurance policies
  • Ensure that our Group insurance programme remains up to date and fit for purpose as the Group continues to expand its footprint and its activities

Working with our partners


  • Manage the relationship with our insurance brokers through a partnership approach such that brokers are empowered to deliver a high level of service, at good value for money and within budget
  • Ensure that our brokers have a good level of understanding of our business and are provided with information about the Group, and developments within it, on a timely and consistent basis
  • Develop and maintain good quality relationships with our principal insurers such that insurers have a good understanding of our business and are equipped to offer effective risk transfer solutions
  • Manage the relationship with the manager of our Guernsey-based Captive insurer ensuring that our Captive insurer is appropriately managed in an efficient and cost-effective manner

Working with our regions and markets


  • Work with our regions and markets to maintain an understanding of the size and shape of their businesses in order to be able to deliver appropriate risk transfer solutions
  • Manage the premium allocation process and payment of group insurance premiums, ensuring transfer pricing rules are maintained
  • Manage the tracking of policy issuance and payment of Group insurance premiums across the Group.
  • Review overseas Inchcape markets local insurance requirements as required to meet local legal requirements or specific local business requirements; ensure no duplication of cover and that local cover has been purchased with Group approval and via the Group broker as far as possible.
  • Manage the property / business interruption and Marine stock survey programmes carried annually across the Group , in conjunction with the insurers. Agree sites to be audited and follow through to ensure action points are closed.

Key skills and Experience required

  • Demonstrable experience and understanding of the Insurance market gained in a similar or adjacent role
  • Experience operating in an international environment
  • Ability to build and maintain a network of internal and external relationships
  • High attention to detail
  • Process driven with excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to prioritise competing demands and work to deadlines
  • Flexibility to operate in a high-demand role
