Job Introduction

Designing experiences that make a difference

The BBC is 100 years old and we’re transforming to meet the needs of audiences in a rapidly changing digital age.

That involves not only continuing to deliver content that is loved and valued by all audiences, but also making sure audiences can find and attribute that content, by building consistency into how the BBC ‘shows up’ across all touchpoints (in the UK and internationally). Making our products and services more easily navigable, and our content more discoverable, ultimately helps increase value audiences get from the licence fee.

We launched a new brand design system in October 2021 which has given us a successful foundation on which to build, and this role will continue to develop and implement that system across our diverse portfolio. We’re a huge streaming media destination, a news source trusted across the world, a provider of educational and entertaining content to children of all ages, and a sports results, analysis, and commentary service, and much more besides. The BBC offers audiences an unparalleled portfolio of products, and our strength is our range and breadth. Joining up our identity across that portfolio is fundamental to sustaining engagement across all we do, and ensuring that the BBC remains a valued daily habit for all audiences.

Main Responsibilities

The Head of Design, BBC Brand, is a senior role working within the Brand team which is part of the BBC’s Chief Customer Officer Group. The person in this role will use proven design experience and excellent communication skills to lead design teams (inside the BBC and external) in the delivery of a joined up, world–class BBC identity, executed across multiple platforms, channels and services

As Head of Brand Design, you’ll work with our in house design teams and third parties to collaboratively define and develop the design strategy for the BBC brand. In addition you will help to oversee correct implementation of our design system. As our products and services evolve, so too will our identity need to be adapted, and part of the remit of this position will be to establish and oversee cycles of review / revision of guidelines and toolkits, in particular for social and digital spaces.

Are you the right candidate?

Psst: It's really important you communicate and contextualise how your experience would translate into an amazing public service for our audiences. It's really about how your amazing experience can serve the public good.

  • Experience as a design leader of large multi-functional teams
  • Experienced in leading design portfolios at large scale
  • First-class team player who collaborates to achieve successful outcomes
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders
  • Demonstrates impact through the work they have led
  • Proven impact in diversity and inclusion
