University College is seeking to recruit an accomplished gardening professional with experience of working in gardens of high professional standards as Head Gardener. The College occupies a historic site in central Oxford and the gardens complement the historic nature of the site and are places intended for the enjoyment of the whole College community, to rest, relax, entertain and enjoy.
The postholder will report to the Domestic Bursar and the Head of Grounds and Gardens. The Domestic Bursar is responsible for the College gardens and sports grounds, which must be kept to a high standard and look neat and presentable at all times. The Head Gardener’s role is to ensure that the gardens are presented to the highest standards for College and student lead events.
The successful candidate will have a strong interest in gardening for wildlife, sustainability, biodiversity and food production. You will have proven skills in ornamental horticulture, with a background which includes training in that area.
In addition, a detailed knowledge of plants, planting and cultivation of shrubs as well as soil management and plant propagation are essential. You will have a sound understanding of COSHH and H&S as well as proven experience of successful project planning and management. You will be positive and proactive and a strong communicator, who can effectively build relationships with a range of stakeholders.
