Role Purpose:
As a key member of the English Programmes Senior Leadership Team, the Head English in Education will lead on further development and implementation of high quality English in Education global programmes. The postholder will provide inspiring and motivational leadership of English in Education that role-models the British Council’s values and behaviours, and empowers and enables staff to deliver excellence, whilst promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. The English in Education Lead will ensure that programmes deliver quality, value for money and impact, enhancing the reputation of the British Council and the UK as world leaders in inclusive English language education.
Role Context:
The aim of English Programmes is to support the improvement of English language teaching and learning in formal and non-formal education systems. English Programmes has the following impact areas and global programmes:
English Connects – our global online engagement with teachers and teacher educators
English in Education – English as a subject in the curriculum and English as a medium of education in formal education systems
English and Empowerment – formal and non-formal education with two strands: Language for Resilience and English for Girls’ Education.
It delivers these programmes in country through policy advice, research and insight, and the delivery of grant, co-funded and full cost recovery contracts and programmes in 50+ countries in collaboration with UK and international partners, ministries of education, education and donor agencies.
English in Education aims to support overseas governments, through partnerships with Ministries of Education and UK expertise, to improve standards of the teaching, learning and assessment of English and the teaching of other subjects through English.
Main Accountabilities:
Strategy and planning
Liaise closely with leaders across English Programmes, Cultural Engagement and the Global Network to translate overarching corporate and English strategies into a high impact global English in Education offer, ensuring the plan is fully aligned to wider organisational objectives and responds appropriately to market conditions and opportunities.
Conduct or commission complex, comparative analyses of performance data and use this to set a global annual business plan for English in Education
Leadership & management
Lead development and implementation of a high quality, compliant and inclusive global programmes.
Provide inspiring and motivational leadership of English in Education that role-models the British Council’s values and behaviours, and empower and enable staff to deliver excellence, whilst promoting equality, diversity and inclusion
Brand and market positioning
Build professional and personal networks with relevant opinion-formers, stakeholders and key clients to ensure a clear understanding of their needs. Use those insights to understand current and prospective business development opportunities for English in Education and inform planning/resourcing/investment decisions.
Liaise closely with relevant colleagues in English Programmes and region to identify and make the business case for investment in new research and development projects for English in Education that will support increased effectiveness and efficiencies and enable the British Council to maintain competitive edge in the medium- to long-term
Business development
Build networks and relationships with strategic clients/partners within their area of influence. Use insights to understand current and prospective business development opportunities for the British Council and inform planning/resourcing/investment decisions.
Lead and account-manage specific strategic client/partner relationships within area of influence and identify and secure new strategic, income-generating opportunities which contribute to the achievement of agreed financial and impact targets.
Own and build the pipeline for area of influence, developing opportunities with identified clients and partners to deliver programmes that are financially viable and achieve our strategic KPIs
Programme management and product development
Lead the global English in Education programmes and team, making authoritative professional recommendations about the focus and content of English in Education, ways of working, and appropriate high-level sector/subject-related partnerships which have a significant impact on the programme’s performance in the short- and medium-term.
Relationship & stakeholder management
Personally lead and develop trust based relations with complex or key accounts/stakeholders/sponsors/partners to support the achievement of agreed commercial and impact targets for English in Education over both the short- to medium-term.
Coach and mentor more junior colleagues to build their account management effectiveness.
Professional services/sector expertise
Build and maintain external networks to access, absorb and apply professional best practice back into English in Education.

Qualification:
Minimum/essential
English teaching qualification
Postgraduate qualification in related field and/or Diploma ELT (TEFL-Q)
Desirable
Qualification with specialism in use of educational technology for English language teaching / education
Role specific knowledge and experience
Minimum/essential
Experience in a leadership role which involves oversight and accountability for leading and/or developing and delivering blended (face to face and digital) ELT programmes
Proven track record and strong experience in designing and managing international teacher development programmes which deliver outcomes for all boys and girls
Strong experience of commissioning specialist professional services (e.g. digital, evaluation)
Strong experience of designing and implementing stakeholder engagement strategies and stakeholder management
Experience of leading proposals/bids for international development education programmes which deliver results in partnership with overseas Ministries of Education
Desirable
Experience in leading projects working in the formal education sector in low and middle income contexts
Understanding of requirements of major funders of British Council programmes, particularly the FCDO and EU
Language Requirements
English at CEFR proficiency level C2
