The Role


Would you like to lead a team delivering the next generation of life changing therapies alongside our innovative biotechnology and pharmaceutical partners?


Charles River has contributed to the development of many currently marketed novel therapies. We can take programs from target validation to clinical development and require experienced drug discoverers to run projects and help our clients negotiate the drug discovery process.


We are looking for a dynamic and influential Group Leader, who is ready to advance their career to the next level by joining our Biology team.


The role will be based at our Chesterford Park site, although you will be expected to interact across other CRL Early Discovery sites and with a diverse range of clients across the world.

The appointed Group Leader will be a key member of the Biology Operational Management Team providing strong scientific, operational and leadership to multiple teams. Line managing a group of 4-6 Scientists, this person will also be leading scientific project teams, assessing the output of projects, ensuring work is completed to a high standard and relayed back to clients in a timely manner.


What You'll Be Doing


  • Line management of up to 6 direct reports.

  • Responsible for performance reviews, succession planning, development and training of team members.

  • To guide junior members of the team in technical aspects of Biology, troubleshooting assays and techniques and aiding in assembly and presentation of complex datasets to our clients.

  • Contribute to the management and performance of the Biology team by taking on selected responsibilities (e.g. recruitment, operational projects etc.).

  • Leading scientific projects and project teams aimed at maintaining client satisfaction as well as delivery on project objectives and financials.

  • Communicating across CRL sites in order to drive efficiencies and enhance best practice.

  • Working with Business Development teams and secure new business through understanding client needs and provide guidance for appropriate methods of achieving their goals with regards to skills available across the business.

  • To regularly interact with existing clients to ensure work is being performed to an acceptable standard, and to rationalise, plan and perform requests for additional project work as appropriate.

  • To ensure that all relevant reports always operate in a safe manner and ensure compliance with CRL site-based safety and compliance guidelines.

Skills and Experience


  • Minimum BS.c , PhD advantageous.

  • Experience of drug discovery and the development of screening cascades

  • Experience of taking molecules from concept to IND is highly desired

  • A track record in leading and motivating small teams in an industrial setting

  • Planning and executing biological assays to investigate novel targets in a range of assay formats, biochemical, cell-based and translational biomarker assays

  • Experience in analysing data and directing appropriate follow-up strategies

  • Ability to communicate results, their impact on project strategy and future experimental plans

  • Experience in the various phases of drug discovery target validation, HTS, Hit2Lead and Lead optimisation.

  • A track record of successful in the project delivery

  • A dynamic and flexible approach towards achieving client-based objectives and meeting challenging deadlines.
