Graduate Software Engineer (IOT)
Software Development, Embedded Software, Cloud Services, Frontend, and Quality & Testing

Start Date: Flexible between the end of July – September 2023

Making an Impact
Our SMART lighting control solutions have a real focus on being sustainable, saving energy and increasing the well-being of people. Inside our Agile R&D organization, we are developing new IoT solutions with products ranging from our own hardware and embedded software products and sensors to mobile applications, developer APIs, and cloud services.
We are now looking for our 2023 intake of Graduate Software Engineer’s to learn and support our R&D teams at our Dartford Office. You will spend the initial 12 months as a graduate, where you be exposed to different areas of our R&D product development lifecycle, which includes potentially working with the following development teams: Embedded, Software, Cloud, and Testing.
Over the past two years we have had fantastic graduates join us and move into full time roles making a big impact in our Embedded, Software and Testing teams. The teams they have joined has been determined by a combination of their interest and the business needs.
Here are the Helvar Product Creation teams you could be exposed too on the scheme:
- Software Development (Wired Team)
- Cloud Services
- Embedded Software Team
- Operational Excellent (Quality and Testing team)
Some of the things you may do on the scheme:
- Developing the product and writing the software
- Specification of individual test cases, including pre and post-conditions with expected results
- Designing and writing test automation scripts
- Using test automation frameworks
- Investigating problems in software as a result of testing
- Working with QA testers and software developers to find solutions
- Updating X-ray
- Work with the team to break down epics to stories and sub-tasks and provide time estimates
- Design, implementation, and test of embedded software modules
- Show progression on assigned tasks through demonstration
- Ensure software is stored and maintained under source code control
- Documentation of design
- Participation in peer design / code reviews
- Implementation of unit tests
Some skills we would be interested in
- An Engineering degree in Software Development / Computer Science or Electronics
- Programming experience in C++, Java, C#, Node JS or similar programming languages
- Programming experience in C/ C++ on embedded target
- Use of scripting languages such as Python or Bash would be beneficial
- Use of test equipment e.g. Oscilloscope
- Good problem-solving with a strong and rational approach to debugging
- Understanding or use of GitHub
- Knowledge of modern software methodologies such as Agile
- Good communication skills both written and oral
- Shows a passion for their subject and a desire to deliver on-time with high quality
- Needs to work well in a multi-national team
- Understanding of continuous integration and development environment
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Teamwork skills are key as interaction with individuals in different roles and teams will be essential
