A Manufacturing Engineer role that’s out of this world

Join a team that’s creating the next industrial revolution hundreds of miles above the planet, from state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Cardiff.

Space Forge
are pioneers of the ‘New Earth Age’ - a start-up that’s transforming ‘return-from-space’ to create revolutionary products for the benefit of humanity; developing ForgeStar, the world’s first returnable and re-launchable satellite platform to support a wide array of missions, from in-space manufacturing of new materials, to planetary landing systems, microgravity research and deep space exploration.

Founded in 2018, we’re quite literally going where no one has gone before in terms of what we manufacture and the outcomes we deliver - with a core team of highly-qualified engineers developing a number of key technologies simultaneously, from our leading-edge 7,500 square foot satellite manufacturing facility that includes a clean room and support for payload integration.

Join us as a Graduate Manufacturing Technician and you’ll be a valued member of a team that has been shortlisted by the IET for the Most Innovative Company of the Year Awards - playing a vital role with an extraordinary enterprise that has already secured a €2 million contract from the European Space Agency, for a commercial space transportation service as part of ESA's Boost! program.

Your role in a leading-edge team

Your work will be at the heart of developing and implementing a wide range of manufacturing solutions, all focused on helping us achieve our goal - delivering to your own KPIs as well as helping fellow team members implement the manufacturing plan in terms of the content, sequence, methods and timing to build, for the development and production of items - assisting with the development of manufacturing production processes, tools and facilities, so that the design can be fabricated and assembled consistently, in full compliance with the specified requirements. You will work in a wide-ranging role that will also see you:

  • Assist Manufacturing Engineers with the implementation of the manufacturing plan in terms of the content, sequence, methods and timing to build development and production items.
  • Assist with the development of manufacturing production processes, tools, and facilities so that the design can be fabricated and assembled consistently, in full compliance with the design requirements at the quoted production rate, cost and timescale.
  • Ownership of maintaining 5 star standard of manufacturing area (including cleanroom facilities)
  • Assist Space Forge in gaining ISO 9001 certification.
  • Contribute to the Manufacturing Readiness Gate Reviews and the Engineering Development Gate Reviews.

Your skills and qualities

Leading the clean industrial revolution by harnessing the potential of space means being adaptable and willing to learn new skills quickly, whilst maintaining excellent technical quality. Everyone in the SpaceForge team has those attributes - as well as the ‘start-up’ attitude of going beyond the job description and trying something new when needed. In return, we will give you all the training and development you need.

Right now, you’ll be a Graduate Engineer, ideally with 6-12 months experience in a similar Manufacturing role that includes:

  • reading production document suites for manufacturing and control
  • working with small to large-sized manufacturing facilities for the production of high-performance equipment to international standards
  • developing and delivering quality control processes
  • lean manufacturing techniques and electronics production
  • an understanding of a wide range of manufacturing processes

You’ll also have the energy, problem-solving skills and professionalism to communicate with and deliver to many different stakeholders (including customers) - and that endless curiosity to explore the possible and continually develop your skills in a diverse team that’s committed to recruiting people from all backgrounds and genders.

Your Rewards

Every day, you’ll be part of the team pioneering fully reusable satellites that can manufacture next generation super materials in orbit - empowering a quantum leap in the manufacture of materials for sectors that include alloys, electronics and pharmaceuticals.

Your rewards reflect the importance of your work, with a package that includes:

  • Starting salary of £23,000-£30,000 dependent on experience.
  • A flexible working environment including high-spec remote working equipment, enabling you to work anywhere in the UK when you don’t need to be in Head Office
