What is the opportunity?

An opportunity has arisen for you to join Buro Happold Geospatial Data Science and Digital Twins team as a Geospatial Data Scientist to support the development of geospatial data and information modelling and management capabilities across the business and externally as a consulting service offering.

This person will be responsible for supporting the Geospatial Data Science and Digital Twins team to apply advanced geospatial analytical techniques to derive insights from its big data environment. The successful candidate will also be responsible for undertaking research and development into geospatial services and application of new technologies, development of automated solutions including developing 3D virtual cities and digital twins, new GIS data products and data science and insights services from the vast array of spatial datasets.

This role will also allow the post holder to take the initiative on the development of data science related projects and analytics products with underlying spatial data to develop our new urban analytics service offer.

The person will also assist in the development of web mapping solutions using machine learning tools and embedding geospatial datasets into gaming platforms/engines to demonstrate the capabilities of GIS solutions to clients using both open source and proprietary software packages. The person will also assist in broadening Buro Happold geospatial data and information modelling capabilities through regular consultations with BIM and Computational Engineering disciplines.

What would I do?

In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the GIS and Digital Twins team in the delivery of Buro Happold GIS/Digital Twin strategy. The candidate will also be responsible for undertaking research and development into geospatial services and application of new technologies, including developing 3D virtual cities and digital twins, new GIS data products and data science and insights services from the vast array of spatial datasets.

What degree would I have studied?

  • Currently studying or have completed a relevant technical degree in Data Science related course, GIS/Computer Science.

Desirable skills:

  • Knowledge in geospatial data analytics and insights concepts and ability to apply them.

  • Knowledge in deriving insights and patterns from big data with statistical methods and processes.

  • Proficiency in data science related languages such as Python, R, Matplotlib and MATLAB.

  • Experience in ArcGIS, QGIS, Shapely or GeoPandas for geospatial data analysis.

  • Knowledge in the development, setting up and configuration of spatial databases such as PostgreSQL/PostGIS, MS SQL Spatial and any other big data platform.

  • Knowledge in using ETL software to automate data processes and create streamlined workflows using graphical programming such as FME, ESRI Interoperability Extension, QGIS Modeller, ArcGIS Model Builder.

  • Candidate should have some experience in creating data schemas, and ontologies, defining properties and rules for different dataset types to encourage data consistency across the business.

  • Familiarity with semantic 3D modelling capabilities and methodologies using 3D datasets such as LIDAR, Point Clouds, and other 3D models and objects.

  • Experience in the development and application of geospatial data standards, methods and procedures e.g., Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards specifications and applications.

  • Ability to train, calibrate and validate computer vision algorithms for feature extraction such as the use of OpenCV and FME.

  • Knowledge in the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) to cluster and

  • Knowledge in developing and using modern data visualisation technology dashboards such as D3.js, Cesium 3D, Deck.gl, PowerBI or equivalent platforms for geospatial data visualisation and analytics.

  • Experienced in web development using programming languages and technologies such as JavaScript, node.js, HTML5, CSS, QT etc.

  • Knowledge in managing GIS Infrastructure on Windows Server, such as database, windows services, IIS management, database configuration, FME Server, ArcGIS Server/ ArcGIS Enterprise, task scheduling and command line tasks.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft software packages such as Power BI, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Microsoft project.

  • Experience in the use of graphic design software packages such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
