Job Description

Business: Environment and Sustainability
Salary: Competitive
Opening and closing dates: Apply as early as possible because candidates are selected on a rolling recruitment basis for either immediate starts or advanced offers.

About You

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate to join our Environmental Planning team. We are looking for a creative and engaging individual who has an interest in planning, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), cartography and environmental and sustainability challenges. Ideally you would have experience of working in a similar field, or proven academic experience, with a strong focus on delivering to deadlines and balancing technical deliverables with creative thought and outputs.

As a Graduate Environmental Planning Consultant in our team, you would be involved in assisting with the team and growing the current capabilities relating to the creation of high quality cartographic, diagrammatic and analytic outputs. These will help to convey key messages through effective, engaging, and accessible designs which retain a level of technical detail whilst simultaneously aiding interpretation for a lay audience. Each project we work on is unique and as such, you will use your knowledge of environmental planning to inform the preparation of maps and diagrams, ensuring they are relevant to the specific scope and audience for which they are intended. You will balance the need for cartographic principles with spatial analysis techniques and technical knowledge of planning and environmental assessment. To align with the anticipated planning reforms, our team are seeking to develop our digital capabilities, and your role would include supporting the development of innovative solutions related to the use of spatial data, cartography and digital solutions. In addition to this, you will help with the preparation of reports and presentations, conduct site visits across a range of settings and contribute to client meetings, ensuring that our reputation for excellence is maintained through all elements of our work. We like to keep learning and development engaging, and so host regular workshops where we share innovative ideas, best practice and keep up to date with the latest policy, guidance and regulations.

A meticulous eye for detail with a creative and analytical lens is an absolute must for this role. We are looking for a positive and engaging individual who will be confident in asking thought provoking and tough questions and who is keen to challenge our current work processes.

Our team works with a range of predominantly public sector clients at various scales, ranging from neighbourhood groups to city region authorities and international clients. We specialise in the delivery of strategic environmental planning, with a particular focus on Sustainability Appraisals/Strategic Environmental Assessments for local plans, neighbourhood plans and sectoral plans.

In ensuring the deliverables meet our high standards your role would involve the following key responsibilities:

The preparation of maps, diagrams and infographics to support the team’s outputs relating to the following elements:

  • Key issues and options identification;
  • Scoping reports;
  • Conceptual maps;

  • Managing incoming spatial datasets from clients.
  • The preparation of engaging reports;
  • The collection and analysis of statistical data, including Census data;
  • Providing input into workshops and presentations showcasing best practice and innovations; and
  • Taking an active approach to collaborating between teams within AECOM.

You will be part of the Impact Assessment Practice Area; a multi-disciplinary team across the UK and Republic of Ireland which delivers high profile projects related to the following core outputs:

  • Strategic Environmental Assessment and Sustainability Appraisal;
  • Environmental Impact Assessment;
  • Housing needs assessment;
  • Social Impact Assessment;

  • Social capital assessment.

Development

  • Graduates joining the business in a Graduate role and engaging in all elements of the ADVANCE programme. The programme is designed to introduce and build essential business and personal skills, helping to enhance the transition from student to professional.
  • Graduates are assigned duties that will provide a broad, well-rounded learning experience within the field they are joining at Graduate entry level.
  • The ADVANCE programme lasts approx. 24 months but the successful completion of the programme is only to be used as an indicator for strong performance in line with other indicators (strong or above performance rating etc)
