Overall purpose:

The successful applicant will be working within the MRC International Relations group providing project management support to international funding activities and strategic planning activities.

You will be part of a team responsible for the delivery of the following MRC funding schemes, contributing to the MRC mission as a funder to improve human health through world class medical research, by helping to deliver MRC’s Global Health funding through research grants. The schemes are:

  • The Applied Global Health Research Board
  • The African Research Leadership call
  • The Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases – Secretariat

Main duties / key responsibilities:

Providing administrative support for international funding activities and strategic planning activities:

  • Responding to queries from grant applicants: To be the first point of contact for grant applicants who are interested in applying to the schemes
  • Application processing: Provide administrative support using in-house systems (training will be provided) to deliver MRC funding schemes. Working as part of a team to ensure tasks are delivered to time.
  • Peer review: Overseeing the process, by which applications are assessed. Providing support to colleagues as well as responding to queries from reviewers approached. Identifying and managing conflicts in peer review.
  • Drafting documents: Drafting papers for funding/strategic meetings, providing input to grant application guidance documents, working across the office and with external partners.
  • Grants management: Supporting applicants throughout the duration of their award by being the first point of contact to manage enquiries received.
  • Financial monitoring: Supporting the Global Health Funding manager by working with award holders and MRC and funding partners finance teams to monitor UK and overseas awards, including additional due diligence of high-risk awards
  • Line Managing: Providing support, guidance and working with staff to ensure objectives are met.

In addition, there will be the opportunities to carry out other administrative duties, including project work as you progress within your role.

Working relationships

Reporting to: Global Health Board Manager.

Staff Management: You will be responsible in line managing 3 administrators

Interactions: Close working relationships will be required with:

  • Staff working at partner organisations including Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC). Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)
  • International and Global Health Programme Managers within the International relations team and across the office
  • Other MRC staff, particularly colleagues working in finance, policy and the Board and Panel teams.
  • Applicants for MRC funding
  • Peer reviewers and those who select peer reviewers

Person requirements

Essential:

  • Educated to A-level or equivalent
  • Experience of working in an administrative environment within a team
  • Managing individuals/teams
  • Experience of delivering to deadlines within tight timescales
  • Ability to work on multiple areas and independently prioritise workload
  • Ability to proactively manage own time
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good analytical skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to use initiative to improve work processes
  • Excellent IT skills, especially in MS Outlook, MS Excel, and MS Word
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and ability to deal effectively with people at all levels

  • Ability to adapt to new systems and processes and modify procedures in response to changing work needs.

  • Leadership skills

Desirable:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Experience of working in a research funding or scientific environment
  • Experience of working in an international environment
  • Knowledge of grants processing
  • Experience of resource planning and management, or supervisory experience
  • Experience of querying databases

Additional information:

N.B. There is a requirement for regular travel to Board and Panel meetings (usually in London offices), which may require overnight stays.
