Position Summary:

This is an outstanding position and opportunity for a General Manager to make significant impact on the Canadian presence of Apellis while serving as a member of Apellis extended leadership team. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the Canadian pharmaceutical industry, strong leadership skills, and a proven track record of driving business growth and profitability for pegcetacoplan, the first treatment available for Geographic Atrophy, a leading cause of blindness. As the General Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's operations in Canada, including sales, marketing, market access, manufacturing, and regulatory compliance. They will be responsible for fine tuning the commercial strategy and building the local country launch plans.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and manage the Canadian affiliate including commercial, market access, and partner functions (Medical, Regulatory, Quality, HR, Finance, Supply Chain, etc)
  • Develop strategy for market access, pricing, and reimbursement for reimbursement across provinces in preparation for product launch.
  • Oversee Canadian infrastructure build for long-term sustainability of the business
  • Lead and build strong relationships with stakeholders across the countries including physicians, provincial payers, patient advocacy groups (PAGs), and national policy makers
  • Work collaboratively with North American Commercial organization to identify synergies and leverage existing resources and repurpose for local execution
  • Define long-term cross functional tactical plans as well as annual operating plans for the Canadian business in alignment with global strategy and vision.
  • Ensure Apellis is operating in strict compliance with all local laws and legislation
  • Develop and manage budgets and financial forecasts to ensure profitability and financial stability.
  • Ownership of P & L and delivery of results against agreed targets
  • Provide regular updates to the executive team on the performance of the Canadian business.

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, MBA preferred
  • 10 years of experience in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or related field
  • Scientific orientation through education or career experience

Experience:

  • A strong understanding of how the biopharma industry operates in the Canadian region
  • Knowledge of and expertise with Health Canada regulatory frameworks and processes to effectively influence label negotiations
  • Knowledge of Canadian market access environment including experience overseeing CADTH and INESSS (Quebec) submissions and negotiations; Confidence to oversee provincial-level negotiations for public reimbursement
  • Expertise of pharma-specific regional and local compliance codes and ability to work with legal/compliance business partners to provide context for appropriate interpretation.
  • A strong background in General Management responsibility within pharma and/or biotechnology including leading and influencing through a matrixed organization
  • Confidence in building a team "from scratch" and operationalizing launch within the market place; experience using creative solutions to solve complex business problems
  • A scientific orientation from experience across multiple specialty therapeutic areas within industry
  • A proven track record of successful product launch(es) in Canada and willing to put in effort that is beyond normal expectations.
  • Ability to set expectations for long-term success; Hands-on to provide a sense of direction and purpose for clear alignment and connection to achieve the organization's strategic goals.
  • Track record to set audacious goals and strong performance metrics; has high expectations for performance and accountability for actions and results and is a self-starter.
