Job description

1 x Full time permanent position and 1 x full time Fixed Term Contract until 28 February 2024 (details to be discussed at interview).

In this role, you will carry out a wide range of horticultural duties, including planting trees, shrubs, natural grassland and bedding schemes. You will also maintain areas by mowing, pruning, digging and strimming. Both areas of work require the use of specialised machinery as well as accurate record keeping to ensure all machinery is safe to use and in good repair. Beyond maintenance, we’ll ask you to come up with your own ideas as to how we can improve and develop our gardens as part of our wider strategy.

What do you have to do:

  • Use a range of horticultural equipment, power tools and machinery.
  • Undertake demanding manual tasks.
  • Take part in the winter gritting and ice-clearing rota.
  • Find ways to improve our gardens and bring our plans to life.

Something about you:

  • Experience working in a residential, commercial or public garden.
  • Able to understand landscape designs and bedding schemes.
  • Hold a Level 2 diploma in horticulture (or an equivalent qualification).
  • Wide knowledge of gardening.
  • Able to complete necessary paperwork.
  • Truly passionate about horticulture.
  • Able to work well as part of a team.
  • Educated to GCSE standards.

The role will include occasional weekend working on a rota basis to cover University events, this will be discussed in more detail at interview.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

To develop and maintain the gardens of the University campus and its horticultural offer, safely and to the highest standards.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To carry out a range of horticultural duties and amenity planting, including small trees, shrubs, natural grassland, bedding schemes, and internal planting schemes as per specific plans. This includes reporting any garden-related issues or hazards that are identified in the work area to the Team Leader (Gardens).

To carry out garden maintenance tasks, including mowing, pruning, digging and strimming.

To use and maintain specialised machinery, tools and equipment. This includes keeping weekly records of machinery, tools and equipment used, and reporting to the Team Leader (Gardens) if any of these become unsafe for use or require repair or replacement.

To prepare and apply horticultural products, including fertilisers, always having regard to the safety of the environment and others. To keep weekly records of chemical applications.

To take part in the winter gritting and ice/snow clearing rota.

To assist with emergency operations outside of working hours i.e. storm damage or flooding.

To always comply with relevant health and safety legislation, including wearing personal protective clothing and equipment.

To carry out other duties commensurate with the grade as requested by the Team Leader (Gardens).
