Job description
An attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced and trained Gardener to work on a three day a week basis, with additional security and pet responsibilities, near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. A three-bedroom house is provided rent free and utility bills covered within the grounds. Candidates will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification or the relevant experience working on a diverse garden.
The beautiful Georgian property in the Chilterns is set in four acres of mature garden, with an additional acre of mown paddock. The ground is chalky which has to be borne in mind in the choice and care of the plants and soil. Regular addition of nutrients, mulch and manure is necessary. The gardener will need his skills and plantsman’s knowledge to care for every aspect of the extensive lawn areas, large herbaceous borders, long yew and deciduous hedges, wall-trained roses and fruit trees.
There are some small vegetables and cut flower plots, a large fruit cage, hot and cold greenhouses; the care of all the latter is shared with other garden helpers and the owner. There are areas of rough grass, woodland and mature trees. The client is a keen horticulturist and will be involved in the overall plan of the garden, and interested in your advice and expertise. Ordering supplies and plants and making arrangements for repair and servicing of machinery would be part of your duties.
There are additional duties relating to site security when the client is away overnight or on holiday. It is of paramount importance that these duties are carried out reliably and diligently.
Care of pets: it is important that the new employee is animal friendly. Dog owners are welcome to apply: when the owners are away on holiday they require the new employee to look after their small friendly dog in the provided house, as they would their own pet. When there are cats, to feed them in the owner’s house. There are chickens which need feeding daily and cleaning out once a month. There is some help with the chicken duties. There are a few small domestic tasks that the owners ask for help with.
This position would suit an experienced Gardener looking to settle in a beautiful part of the country with many easily accessible amenities. The village is in the catchment area for the Buckinghamshire schools, and there is a bus to the local primary school.
Applicants should be physically fit, strong and energetic, with good communication skills and an enjoyment of their work and of plants. There are two days for the employee to pursue other work or interests.
