JOB DESCRIPTION: GARDENER - 15 hours per week over 3 days

Responsible to: Home Manager

Reports to: Home Manager

Overall objective: To assist in the safe, efficient running of the home by general day to day maintenance of the grounds and the buildings.

Overall Responsibilities

Follow instructions as requested by the Home Manager or Nurse in Charge.

Ensure that the premises are kept secure at all times.

Ensure that any information collected during the performing of duties is kept confidential.

Ensure economical use of the Home’s resources and minimising of any wastage by all staff.

Maintain the safety of all residents, visitors and staff at all times.

Ensure that the good name of the Home is upheld at all times.

Treat all residents and visitors to the Home with respect.

Liaise with the visitors and external agencies in a professional manner.

Maintain high standards of accommodation so that the Home is presentable, tidy and clean at all times.

Ensure there are no Health & Safety hazards which might put residents or visitors at risk.

Report as a matter of urgency any abuse or neglect of residents to the Sister-in Charge or the Manager.

General Management and Administration

Responsible for the general tidiness of the outside of the Home, including car park, sweeping up of debris each morning and the removal of all waste to the bin collection areas and to keep these areas clean and tidy.

Responsible for all minor maintenance jobs within the grounds as indicated by the Home Manager, including decorating and gardening, or as noted in the maintenance book.

Ensure front of property is kept clean, tidy and safe at all times.

Ensure potted plants are watered daily.

Keep all hedges and plants trimmed and pruned at all times.

Ensure all lawns are mowed at least weekly.

Ensure hanging baskets are replaced twice a year when due for each season.

Ensure all plants, shrubs and the lawns are fed as required to maintain good presentation.

Remove any dead heads and dead leaves as required.

Ensure soil in all planted borders and pots is turned over regularly to maintain an attractive appearance and all weeds are removed regularly.

Ensure climbing plants are trained on wires and kept neat and clipped to provide a good presentation.

Ensure all paved areas at the front and the back of the property are pressure washed at least six monthly or more often if required.

Keep sheds and all gardening equipment clean and tidy at all times.

Keep an update inventory of the sheds and provide a copy to the Home Manager and the Managing Director

Purchase any plants and equipment as required.

Remove any rubbish from site if required.

Report any gardening, car park or health and safety issues to the Home Manager.

Assist with any maintenance tasks internally or externally as required by the Home Manager.

Undertake any other duties required relating to the maintenance and upkeep of the external areas.

Health, Safety and Security

To be aware of fire procedures and to attend fire lectures as required.

Attend in service training lectures on Manual Handling as required.

Ensure that all equipment is used correctly and safely in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and/or guidance from statutory bodies.

Maintain equipment in good condition and report any loss or damage to the Home Manager or the Person in Charge.

Respond to emergency/crisis situations as a matter of priority.

Ensure that all reasonable precautions are taken to ensure the safety and welfare of residents, staff and visitors in the Home and that Health and Safety procedures are adhered to.

Ensure that all accidents to residents, staff and visitors are reported and recorded following the Home’s policies and procedures.

Ensure fire exits are kept clear at all times. Refer any difficulties to the Manager.

Ensure clear access is provided for the trade waste to be collected.

Ensure external doors/gates are kept locked to maintain a secure environment.

Assist with any events/celebrations and barbecues as required.

Ensure visitors park correctly in the parking spaces and ensure there is no unauthorised parking in the Home’s parking spaces.

Personnel and Training

Attend staff meetings as required.

Attend Appraisal meetings as required.

Participate in induction and other staff training events.

Attend in service training.
