Company Description

Genomics England partners with the NHS to provide whole genome sequencing diagnostics. We also equip researchers to find the causes of disease and develop new treatments – with patients and participants at the heart of it all.

Our mission is to continue refining, scaling, and evolving our ability to enable others to deliver genomic healthcare and conduct genomic research.

We are accelerating our impact and working with patients, doctors, scientists, government and industry to improve genomic testing, and help researchers access the health data and technology they need to make new medical discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines for everybody.

Job Description

We’re looking for a talented Principal Content Designer to join our fast-growing Design and Research team.

You’ll be embedded in the Newborns Service — a ground-breaking research study. It looks at whether sequencing babies’ genomes at birth could lead to faster diagnoses and better treatments for rare genetic conditions.

Here is some of our recent news coverage. You can also learn more on our website.

What you’ll do:

  • Get to know the Newborns Service: What it is, how it works, and how it could transform healthcare. You’ll also get to know our users and their needs. We have lots of qualitative research to get you started.

  • Own content across the service: Your work could span digital tools, letters, leaflets, posters, and style guides. You’ll make sure this content is evidence-based, iterating and pulling in research insights on a regular basis.

  • Build great working relationships: You’ll be a central part of the team, collaborating closely with user research, product design, service design, clinical content creators, ethics, and product.

  • Champion accessibility: Our users are new or expectant parents and healthcare professionals of all backgrounds and abilities. For parents, you’ll design accessible, empathetic content that helps them understand unfamiliar concepts during a busy time in their lives. For healthcare professionals, you’ll design content for tools and trainings that make their tasks clear and easy to complete.

  • Make sure our content satisfies all legal and regulatory requirements: You’ll work with ethicists, genetic counsellors, and other healthcare professionals to make sure our words are clear, fair, and not misleading.

About you:

You’re an experienced Content Designer with a background in creating accessible, evidence-based content for products and services.

  • You have substantial experience in content design or UX writing: You understand accessibility principles. And you have a portfolio that shows your expertise across platforms and methods.

  • You can plan and organise content work: You can define workflows, work through ambiguity, manage feedback, iterate at pace, and prioritise outcomes.

  • You work confidently with other design disciplines: You know how to collaborate with product design, service design and research, and you can work in tools like Figma and Miro.

  • You collaborate well with disciplines outside of design: You can harness expertise from specialists and subject matter experts. You know how to translate technical, clinical, or regulatory language into clear content.

  • You have great organisational skills and set a strong example through your work: You can stick to deadlines, explain your process, build conviction in others, and demonstrate the power of good content.

  • You understand agile working but can be flexible in your approach: You can lean on and challenge the team around you to deliver in the best way for our users.

As part of our recruitment process, all successful candidates are subject to a Standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. We therefore require applicants to disclose any previous offences at point of application, as some unspent convictions may mean we are unable to proceed with your application due to the nature of our work in healthcare.

Genomics England operates a blended working model as we know our people appreciate the flexibility. We expect most people to come into the office 2 times each month as a minimum. However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. For some people this is 1 day a quarter, for others it is several days a week. There is no expectation that staff will return to the office full time unless they want to. The exception would be some of our roles that would require you to be on site full time e.g., lab teams, reception team.

Our teams and squads have, and will continue to, reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum. Our office locations are Canary Wharf, Cambridge and Leeds.
