Job summary
Whilst DCMS is advertising this vacancy, the successful candidate(s) may ultimately be appointed to the newly created Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
Future telecoms is one of five technologies critical to boosting the UK’s economy and cementing the UK as a science and technology superpower by 2030, as set out in the Science and Tech Framework. It is one of the most high profile policy areas within DSIT, with close political, parliamentary and media interest that sits at the heart of the government's productivity, security and international policy ambitions
You'll be working in the policy team delivering the UK’s 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy, backed by an initial £250 million government investment, which sets out a plan to reduce the UK’s reliance on a small number of telecoms equipment suppliers and build UK capability in future telecoms.
This policy area sits at the intersection of a number of high profile wider government priorities: investing in emerging technologies, levelling up digital infrastructure, addressing market failures, national security, and the UK’s place in a shifting geopolitical landscape. As such there is significant ministerial interest in this area, and the opportunity to develop highly impactful policy.
Job description
We are recruiting for four band B roles;
Incumbent Vendors and Supply Chain Risks Policy Advisor
Developing UK Capability in Future Telecoms Policy Advisor
International (R&D) Policy Advisor
International (Asia-Pacific) Policy Advisor
All roles require leadership of discrete projects and contributing to making our team a great place to work.
This is a rapidly developing priority policy area and additional policy roles are likely to become available in the near-term.

Person specification
Essential requirements:
- Policy making experience, including evidence of seeing a policy through from initiation through to implementation.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment with the ability to work with incomplete information, national security judgements and technical information to provide advice to seniors and Ministers.
- Relationship building skills, including with seniors and experts. Experience of influencing and negotiating with others.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Track record of working with autonomy
Desirable skills:
- Related expertise: the ambition, profile and pace of these roles requires the candidates to preferably come to them with a foundation in related policy areas, though not essential.
- An understanding or interest in broader emerging technology and its geopolitical implications.
- International policy adviser roles only: An understanding or experience of international/ diplomatic engagement.

Location
This role can be based in London, Manchester, Darlington or Belfast.The hub locations are displayed on the job advert. Not all hub locations have confirmed office space yet - successful applicants will be expected to work remotely until this becomes available.
