Job description
Fused Fibre Components Development Engineers / Physicists / Optical Engineers with a background in Fibre Laser Technology are sought by a world leading innovator of Lasers. Using your Optical Fibre specialist experience together with a strong appreciation of the Physics of the Fibre Optics involved and the Engineering required, particularly Glass Processing, behind developing Fused Components, you will undertake the design and manufacture of custom Fused Components used with Single Mode, but also MultiMode High Power Fibre / Diode Laser (CW and Pulsed Peak) platforms - including Mode Field Adaptors, Mode Adaptors, Signal Combiners, Pump Combiners, End Caps, Output Combiners and Couplers. Glass Processing you will be involved in from design to manufacture includes Fibre Bundling, Fibre Tapering, Fibre Cleaving and Fibre Splicing. Bundle processes can include loading and feeding of multiple fibres, including use of Capillary Tubes and Tension Monitoring. Taper processes can include Biconical Tapering, Thermal Expansion / Thermal Expanded Core, Physical Fibre Tapering, Diffusion Tapers and Geometric Taper. Cleave processing can include Tension and Scribe, Scribe and Bend, Angular Misalignment issues, Mechanical Polishing and Laser shaping. Splice processing can include Fusion Splicing, Arc Discharge and Filament based Splicing. End Cap Fabrication for optimum Beam Delivery will also be a key consideration. As you design custom fibre-laser components which combine semiconductor laser diodes into a single fibre or systems used to pump high power fibre lasers or for direct combination of laser diodes your design work will include splitting / monitoring of optical signals, wavelength combining / beam pointing, tap ratios and packaging issues. This will include investigating issues such as Transmission Losses minimisation / control, Signal Matching, Optimal Mode Coupling, Mode Field Diameter / Mode Field Matching, Lossless Modal Transmission, Bending Losses, Surface Tension issues in fusion, Coherent beam combining, Numerical Aperture Characterisation, Pump power distribution and Pump Losses. PhD / MSc in Physics / Optics with experience from either industry or a research environment in Fused Components for Optical Fibres, ideally Fibre Lasers. Optical Engineers or Physicists with experience using Beamprop or working with polarisation maintaining fibres ( PM fiber ) or Large Mode Area fibres ( LMA fiber ) also advantageous. Background in WDM devices or DPSS-Lasers, with Zemax also considered.
