Job Introduction

The BBC’s Work and Money team in Salford produces programmes for the World Service, Radio 4 and Radio 5 as well as making podcasts and the business news on BBC One Breakfast. We are looking for freelance producers to join our teams working on a range of output.

The team aims to give our audience informed and accessible coverage in all areas of financial and economic news. You might be covering stories such as cost of living, striking workers, corporate news or what’s happening on the high street. We make award winning programmes such as Business Daily and Business Matters on the World Service; Wake Up To Money on 5 Live and Money Box on Radio 4. We also provide the business news on R4 Today and Breakfast on BBC One and podcasts such as The Big Green Money Show with Deborah Meaden.

The BBC is committed to journalistic excellence and aims to provide access to the information and ideas everyone needs to make sense of an increasingly complex world on whatever platform they chose and bring impartial and trusted news reporting to audiences all over the globe.

Work offered as a result of this freelancer pool will be carried out at MediaCity, Salford so individuals will need to be in easy commuting distance.

Main Responsibilities

We’re creating a talent pool of producers on a freelance basis who we can contact to work with us at peak times.

We’re looking to recruit people with a range of skills to work as part of the teams within the Work and Money unit in a variety of areas.

We’re looking for freelancers either with experience of radio or TV production or in business and financial journalism. Duties may involve booking and briefing guests, researching stories, writing briefs, audio or visual treatments, creating running orders and overseeing, gathering material in the field and working on OBs as well as contributing to the planning and origination of new angles and stories.

This is a 24 hour news operation so some shifts involve working unsociable hours.

Are you the right candidate?

You will need a good knowledge of our editorial agenda, sharp production skills and be able to respond to a fast-moving news environment. Candidates should enjoy working under pressure and bring plenty of story, contributor and production ideas to the role. You will be expected to work across our platforms and have an understanding of the different production methods as well as audience needs. You will be comfortable with technology and social media, able quickly to pick up new skills and turn ideas into engaging coverage. You will need a thorough understanding of the BBC’s editorial guidelines and values or the ability to pick this up quickly.

About the BBC

We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours in the document attached below.

Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
