Job Summary:
The Food Pantry Assistant is responsible for assisting in the daily operations of the food pantry program, ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow. Key tasks include inventory management, volunteer supervision and training, food delivery coordination, client information updates, financial security, and maintaining food safety and hygiene standards.
Reports to: Food Pantry Coordinator/Manager
Working Days: Thursday and Fridays (Including bank holidays and holiday periods)
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in maintaining food pantry inventory by informing the Project Coordinators/Manager and relevant vendors when supplies are low.
- Support the training, scheduling, and daily supervision of food pantry volunteers to ensure efficient pantry operations.
- Help coordinate the food delivery program by matching volunteers with clients, securing food orders, and scheduling volunteer pick-up and delivery.
- Update client information in the spreadsheet to keep records accurate and ensure there are no financial discrepancies.
- Ensure the security of funds received by the food pantry, and coordinate with the appropriate staff member for depositing into the charity's account.
- Assist in packing and stocking food orders and shelves as needed, maintaining an organised and clean pantry space.
- Complete any reasonable tasks assigned by the Management Team, or Food Pantry Coordinator to support the overall operations of the food pantry.
- Ensure adherence to food safety and hygiene standards at all times, following proper food handling and storage protocols.
- Promote and adhere to the ethos, aims, policies, and practices of the charity, fostering a positive and supportive work environment.
- Participate in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) initiatives to maintain up-to-date knowledge and improve job performance.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Some college or vocational training preferred.
- Must be able to lift and carry
- Experience working in a food pantry, warehouse, or similar environment.
- Basic computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work well with diverse groups of people.
- Ability to multitask, prioritise, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards.
- Willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities.
Requirements:
- Basic ICT skills and awareness of Health and Safety legislation
- Valid UK driving license (if required for client food parcel deliveries)
- Experience working with volunteers or in a non-profit organisation is preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work well in a team and take a proactive approach to problem-solving
