The role of the Area Fleet Maintenance Manager (AFMM) is critical in the delivery of Fleet performance and meeting the requirements of the Operator amongst its Area Maintenance teams.You will have the accountability to drive critical improvements in performance and efficiency.


You will work collaboratively with key business stakeholders, internal customers and the Fleet Operations team to manage the fleet of vehicles and input to key strategies, to deploy the strategy, policy and standards that relate to them.


As AFMM, you are responsible for the performance of the Fleet Workshops in their designated regions, with specific accountability for delivering performance against all key maintenance scorecard indicators including; safety, legal, cost, people and stakeholder performance measures.


  • Responsible for multiple workshop sites (c25 workshops) within an area (c £12m staff budget - £18m non staff budget per area)
  • Headcount responsibility from 200- 250 staff across large geographical area
  • Management and DVSA compliance of c15 MOT/ATF stations within the workshop area

You will be based at various regional locations – mainly Midlands area with UK travel required.


About the role


You will be accountable for running an efficient, compliant and cost-effective area of Fleet workshops and accountable for compliance to both legal and RM safety policies and meeting safety targets.


Responsible for the successful deployment of maintenance provision within the workshops to fulfil customer requirements and accountable for delivering maintenance services and for optimising cost performance & forecasting through the use of the resource planning tools and resourcing to workload.


You will be accountable for delivering maintenance services and for optimising cost performance & forecasting through the use of the resource planning tools and resourcing to workload and responsible for optimising the efficiency of Fleet Workshops to meet or exceed industry standard performance levels.


Provide effective coaching, engagement and communication to lead and develop the regional Fleet Workshop teams and be accountable for the achievement of all agreed targets including internal customer targets within SLA’s through the use of effective performance management techniques.


Provide visible and effective leadership for the regional Fleet Workshops teams and be accountable for the deployment of all changes, relating to the Fleet Workshops and build effective and professional relationships with all internal senior key stakeholders /customers. Being the escalation point of contact for senior operational managers for Fleet related queries that aren’t resolved at local level.


Ensure the ongoing compliance to ISO 9001 quality standard within Fleet to effectively manage the CWU IR interface, working collaboratively with union colleagues to embed change successfully and effectively manage the territorial and where necessary national IR relationships with our recognised trade unions, working collaboratively with our union partners and colleagues to embed change successfully at pace.


About You

  • Ability to effectively manage and build productive relationships with senior stakeholders, DVSA and Trade Unions.
  • Ability to manage a large number of external contractors providing specialist vehicle maintenance services and ensure that the cost, quality and efficiency of these external providers meet the needs of Royal Mail
  • Ability to influence and deliver results through people
  • Resilience and agility to drive performance improvement
  • Delivery of targets and solutions in a cost-effective way

Experience


  • Relevant industry experience and knowledge of dispersed vehicle maintenance operations (or similar dispersed manufacturing, network, utility/logistics/service organisation).
  • Proven track record of leadership and performance management
  • Experience of leading and coaching teams through change
  • Knowledge of compliance requirements for vehicles and road transport legislation is desirable
  • Preferable, educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Recognised Technical qualification
  • Full driving licence
