The opportunity:
The primary responsibilities of this role are to lead, develop and support the actuaries and analysts executing capital planning and management activities for Markel Corporation in whole and its regulated insurance entities and to drive improvements in talent, processes and tools that support capital allocation decisions across the company.
The role is responsible for Financial Planning and Reporting of the Internal Model and will require collaboration and support for: capital model architecture, business support and regulatory reporting. Analysis and reporting performed by the team is used by senior leaders to drive data-informed decisions at group, division, legal entity and product lines levels
Active collaboration with other capital team managers as well as key stakeholders and business partners across underwriting, finance & actuarial, strategy, risk management and other functions is required. Maintaining strong working relationships across the company are critical to the success of this role. Strong communication skills are essential
This position may include the management of one or more direct reports within a shared team structure and report to the Global Head of Capital
What you'll be doing:
Support and manage capital models for regulatory purposes including preparation of the quarterly Solvency II Solvency Capital Requirement (SCR), Bermuda Solvency Capital Requirement (BSCR) and other regulatory, rating agency and internal capital requirements
Providing performance guidance and coaching to other members of the team on Financial Planning and Reporting for the Internal Model. Collaborating with other capital managers regarding planning, prioritizing and executing work performed by the team
Ensuring that work is delivered on time and to a high standard
Represent the capital team on cross-functional teams
Support corporate goals and principles and communicating those to members of the team
Objective setting and performance management from a team perspective
Our must have's:
Deep understanding of Solvency II and accounting regulations, regulatory returns such as the PRA’s IMO and Lloyds’ LCR, and their applications in capital management is required
Strong experience in a capital accountant, actuary or associate position within an insurance organization
Qualified member of an Accounting Body / Chartered Financial Analyst / the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries or Associate / Fellow of Casualty Actuarial Society preferred or equivalent
Experience with stochastic capital model updates, model parameterization and/or validation is required. Specific experience with WTW's Igloo Capital Model (ICM) is preferred
Experience with global, US, EU (Solvency II) and Bermuda regulatory and rating agency capital requirements, models and methodologies is preferred
Experience in updating on a regular basis a multi-entity Internal Model’s balance sheet and income statement including its key components and being outward facing to Finance
Working on automations to processes and an ability to strategically streamline
Strong experience in capital modelling & analysis with experience in a senior contributor role. Experience within a global insurance organization is preferred
Experience with managing team workflows and generating impactful capital reporting for a wide range of audiences
Strong people skills with ability to elevate individuals and teams in a dynamic work environment
Team player who can excel in a highly collaborative team environment and can work closely with team leadership to contribute to and execute team strategies and plans
A customer service mindset with a track record of effective and persuasive communication at all levels of an organization
Be able to work across departments, disciplines and geographies with sufficient authority
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
