Finance Analyst - Argos Store Facing - 12M FTC

- 12 Month Fixed Term Contract (2300010D)


The role will proactively business partner the Argos Operational leadership team, Central Retail teams and other retail stakeholders, providing insightful analysis, challenge and influence to drive decisions and actions that improve the performance of Argos stores and ultimately the bottom line. The role holder will support the Finance Managers and Head of Finance to enable informed and effective commercial decisions and maximise value creation.


What you need to do

  • Act as key Finance Business Partner for the Argos Retail team interpreting financial performance to provide insight, analysis and commentary to stakeholders and providing challenge to the business
  • Provide pro-active support and analysis, actively highlighting where improvements can be made to your stakeholders
  • Build, manage and maintain strong relationships with our internal stakeholders, being the Retail Operational teams and the relevant Finance teams, whilst maintaining the ability to influence and challenge constructively
  • Work with the Retail Reporting team to ensure timely insight and financial reports, raising challenges as required but also providing support
  • Support performance reviews, highlighting anomalies, changes or items to be investigated. Act on decisions to close gaps in actual financial performance versus target collaborating with Retail colleagues and developing reporting or analysis to support this
  • Support the preparation of plans and budgets reviewing performance deviations and advising on required future corrective actions to the Head of Finance and Finance Managers
  • Provide support to ensure any Latest views and Period end processes are completed in an accurate and timely manner, therefore aiding the delivery of financial forecasts
  • Supporting in the creation of periodic finance meeting packs, providing insightful analysis that drives action
  • Complete ad hoc / bespoke analysis and reporting for the business area as required to drive improvements
  • Supporting several ad hoc projects and various teams as required during busy times such as Peak, Year End, Budget, Corporate Plan etc.
  • Support the development of uniform reporting and performance evaluation across all Retail channels enabling your business partners to quickly establish their areas of focus through the Channel, Cost/Revenue line and Geographic lenses.
  • Spend regular time in store to build operational knowledge, ensuring analysis is as robust and business focused as possible

What you need to know and show

  • Qualified Accountant (CIMA/ACA/ACCA) or studying towards qualification
  • Strong Excel and numerical skills, with an aptitude for turning data into analysis and insight (experience in using SQL is helpful but not essential)
  • Strong commercial acumen
  • Good track record of strong financial control, but also the ability maintain such an environment
  • A desire to achieve best in class business partnering – holding the business to account while striving to support success with demonstrable energy and determination
  • Effective communicator with all levels of stakeholders, including audiences of varying financial and commercial acumen
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and ability to present complex information in a simplified manner
  • Self-motivated team player, able to work autonomously and prioritise with good problem-solving skills
  • Must have a strong eye for detail and a passion for accuracy

  • Application of Finance principles, guiding our non-Finance business partners on the proper application and impact
  • Application of appropriate judgement in work of an ambiguous or complex nature

Support we will provide

  • Appropriate ad-hoc support from the Head of Finance and Finance Managers, but also the wider Commercial and Retail Finance Team
  • Training both on the Job and via Sainsbury’s L&D offer including face to face sessions and online resources.

The role works within the Supply Chain and Logistics Finance team and is responsible for leading on Stock and Waste Reporting as well as supporting the Supply Chain Cost to Serve (CTS) team. This role is responsible for creating the assets required to effectively business partner, focussing on value creation and collectively strengthening our performance. The job holder will provide insight, analysis and commentary to stakeholders, aiming to influence and drive decisions and actions that improve the bottom line. This individual will support the Finance Manager and Head of Finance in Supply Chain and the wider Finance team as required.


What you need to do

  • Take the lead on weekly Stock and Waste reporting ensuring it’s insightful, accurate and timely
  • Work with internal teams including Supply Chain Analysis or ADA to complete analysis to resolve business problems and automate, streamline, and improve existing reporting
  • Provide cover for the Stock and Waste Finance Manager’s as required
  • Work closely day-to-day with CTS Project Managers and Supply Chain Operational teams to provide financial support and challenge in pursuit of the Sainsbury’s strategy
  • You will be responsible for consolidation and reporting of CTS program benefits, providing financial rigor to ensure reported benefits are accurate and robust as well as communicated back to Supply Chain in a timely and engaging way
  • Identify risks, anomalies and opportunities and flag these to the Finance Manager / Head of Finance for prioritisation
  • Role will require a high level of stakeholder engagement to ensure CTS project updates are clearly communicated and risks and opportunities are fully understood
  • In line with timelines and process set, work with the business to manage Forecasting, LV & Budgeting
  • As part of the Supply Chain Finance team, you will support your Finance Managers and Head of Finance, advising on project progress and financial benefits
  • Complete ad hoc / bespoke analysis across Stock, Waste & CTS for the business area as required to drive improvements
  • Build business cases and support post implementation reviews
  • Support the wider team on other Finance processes and budgets as required
  • Attend business review meetings supporting our Stakeholders as needed
  • Success in this role will mean being able to deliver timely, robust and accurate reporting and analysis; translating data into valuable business insight, communicating all relevant financial and non-financial information when needed

  • Professionally Qualified Accountant (ACCA/ACA/CIMA), or studying towards qualification
  • Strong Excel and numerical skills, with an aptitude for turning data into analysis and insight and being able to clearly articulate this through your communication
  • Strong commercial acumen
  • To have a good track record of strong financial control, but also the ability to maintain such an environment
  • Team player, able to work effectively within frameworks without direct supervision
  • Effective communicator with all levels of stakeholders, including audiences of varying financial and commercial acumen
  • Curiosity beyond traditional finance boundaries and ability to understand key business and operational drivers
  • Self-motivated team player, able to work autonomously, prioritise with good problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to prioritise workload whilst managing business and finance stakeholder expectations in a fast-paced environment
