Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed midwife to lead fetal monitoring activities within the maternity service of the busy and complex unit at St Thomas’ hospital.

The successful candidate will have solid midwifery experience and interest in learning from incidents and leading changes in practice to improve care of women and their families.

The post holder will continue the work of the previously successful team and continue the current years training programme. The post holder will be responsible for working with the obstetric fetal monitoring lead to design the fetal monitoring training programme for the coming year and lead on ward based informal and formal teaching. The post holder will be expected to spend half their working time on the birth centres providing onsite support to staff and ensuring good fetal monitoring practice is established with the maternity team.

We hold over 14,000 gynaecology appointments, and deliver over 6,000 babies a year. We have one of the largest NHS IVF units in the UK, which includes our flagship Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis services. Alongside our clinical services, we are integrated with colleagues at King’s College London, delivering a significant programme of research and development.

The purpose of this role is to lead the fetal monitoring practice on both the Hospital Birth Centre (labour ward) and Home from Home Birth Centre (MLU). This includes formal and information education of all types and grades of clinical staff and working alongside staff in the intrapartum areas.

The post holder will be involved in the development and implementation of fetal monitoring guidelines and procedural documents, education of staff both formally and on the Hospital Birth Centre and assessing the competence of both midwifery and obstetric staff.

The post holder is expected to be present in the intrapartum areas to lead and support staff with fetal monitoring at least 50% of their working time.

The post holder participate in evaluation of the project and adapt the educational methods based on this feedback.
