As a Paediatric Nurse, your role is not just taking care of the patient, more so you will be nurturing the needs of the family as a whole providing a holistic approach to the care you provide.

Are you a highly motivated and committed nurse keen to join a dynamic paediatric team? Our Paediatric Department provides a warm and welcoming environment that will give you the space and facilities to provide exceptional, family-centred care.

The Paediatric Unit at UHCW consists of three age specific wards allowing the children and their families to thrive amongst their peers whilst being Nursed in an environment designed specifically with their needs in mind. The department also houses an aspiring Level 2 Critical Care Unit (HDU), a Paediatric Medical Day Unit and Surgical Day Unit as well as a large Paediatric specific Outpatient Department and Children’s Emergency Department.

We currently have vacancies in the following areas:
Ward 14 is our Adolescent Ward caring for young people aged 12-18 years, it is a 12 bedded Ward specialising in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

Ward 15 is our Infant Ward, caring for babies age 0-2. It is a 15-17 bedded Ward with an expertise in respiratory care. Paediatric HDU is based on the Ward and has 6-8 beds, staff working on Ward 15 will have the opportunity to gain experience in High Dependency care if this interests them.

Ward 16 is our Children’s Ward caring for children age2-12.It is our biggest ward consisting of a 24 beds, specialising in Paediatric Oncology for children of all ages.

On a daily basis we work with the Paediatric team, the acute medical teams, acute surgery, the orthopaedic team and other specialities. We also work closely with dieticians, specialist nurses, physiotherapists and play specialists to enable us to offer holistic care.

The Unit also has well established links with KIDS (Kids Intensive Care & Decision Support) based at Birmingham Children's Hospital. Each area has bespoke nurse development and training plans with the support of our experienced Paediatric Practice Education Team.

  • Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team including situations where difficulties in comprehension occur.
  • A competent practitioner, supervising/providing mentorship to a small number of learners or junior staff.
  • Responsible for co-ordination and clinical assessment of a group of patients, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated, involving patients and carers.
  • Participate in observations of care, audit and development of service to improve quality of care.
  • Demonstrate technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient care management including; patient observations; equipment management and administration of agreed invasive tests/procedures.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise information and IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data.
  • Manage expected clinical events/enquiries, requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort, ensuring referral to a senior member of staff where appropriate e.g in an unexpected event.
  • Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times
