Job overview

The Paediatric Tier 3 complications in excess weight (CEW) service uses a holistic approach to treating conditions related to obesity in children and young people.

Young people will receive 12 to 18 months of intensive treatment from the MDT (which includes consultants, clinical fellow, dietitian, social worker, specialist nurse, clinical psychologist, family support worker, exercise physiologist and physio assistant), with the aim to improving health complications linked to their weight.

Referrals to CEW for young people aged 2 – 18 years old are based on the degree of obesity and the presence of comorbidities.

This post of The Exercise Physiologist will support the Nottinghamshire out-patient clinics based at NUH and will also provide virtual support to spoke sites including Derby, Lincoln and Kings Mill. There are also opportunities to work within the community (home and school visits) to promote inclusivity for our CEW patients, encouraging physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviours.

Working days will be full days Tuesday, Thursday and Friday

As well as being part of the CEW MDT you will also be an integral member of our established Children’s Therapy team based in the Nottingham Children's Hospital at the QMC campus of NUH.

Main duties of the job

Work alongside members of the CEW team to ensure the development and delivery of a high quality service.

You will be able to work autonomously in line with activity management guidance and provide appropriate day to day supervision of a band 4 Physiotherapy support worker including providing any
relevant training.

Deliver high quality, clinically effective care, and patient experience, utilising research and in collaboration with colleagues in everyday practice.

Act as a role model and clinical resource demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in this specialist area.

Contribute to the development and delivery of a programme of practice and professional development within the team and relevant colleagues.

The CEW service is currently within a pilot stage and there are opportunities to collect, analyse and present data at both a national and local level. You will work in partnership with the Leicestershire Physiotherapist to identify, develop and provide innovative ways to address obesity among our young population.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Sports Science degree or equivalent
  • Relevant post-graduate diploma level study for area of specialty or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • Relevant MSc in Physiology/Sports Science or equivalent
  • BASES accredited

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge or experience of exercise testing and prescription in long term conditions
  • Experience of delivery and supervision of exercise sessions for those with long term conditions
  • High level of computer literacy with good use of Microsoft packages including Word, Excel and Outlook applications

Desirable criteria

  • NHS Clinical expertise
  • Experience of working with children and young people and / or Obesity
  • Experience or knowledge of delivering behaviour change interventions.

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to provide and receive complex sensitive information

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of supervision of non-registered staff
