Specialised Cardiac Physiologist, Band 6 - Plus 20% R&R

The Cardiology department is particularly forward thinking with 13 Consultant Cardiologists. A wide range of procedures are performed within the department, including the two catheter laboratories (complex device implantation & PCI).

The Trust provides an extensive follow-up service for all devices and includes a well-established remote follow-up service. The remote service has been expanded and developed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The successful candidate will be expected to rotate through CRM & the intervention lab as service demand dictates.

At present the service is co-located between Cheltenham General Hospital & Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with plans presented being incorporated to bring all of Cardiac Services onto one site at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (within 12 months) & an additional 3rd lab to follow, with a view to delivering EP locally.

The post-holder is expected to be a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual, using their experience and knowledge to provide a highly professional standard of care. The successful candidate will have BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent and be expected to have a level of skill and autonomy appropriate to the Band 6 level.

The successful candidate will have experience leading brady implant and follow-up.

BHRS Devices or EP certification, or recognised equivalent, is desirable.
Independent invasive technical expertise will be expected during diagnostic and interventional cardiac cath lab cases, including acquisition of haemodynamic data for left and right heart studies, PCI, PPCI and IABP set up and monitoring.

The department does offer a 24/7 PPCI on call service which the successful candidate will be an active member of this team.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will acquire and maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests, investigations and measurements carried out under the band 6 remit. They will be expected to interpret and act upon results of tests, investigations and measurements in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

The individual will be expected to contribute to new proposals and protocols, especially for service improvements, and share the responsibility for quality assurance. Active involvement in the personal and professional development of other clinical cardiac physiologists and assistant cardiac practitioners is required.

The post holder will work in a multidisciplinary team that includes other cardiac physiologists, assistant cardiac practitioners, radiographers, consultants and medical staff, nursing staff and all other personnel either hospital or externally based. The post holder will report to and is accountable to the two Lead Cardiac Physiologists.

Main duties and responsibilities

To perform in PCI & to participate in the 24/7 PPCI on call rota as required.

To assist in the responsibility for stock control ensuring levels are maintained appropriately.

Responsible, with other senior physiologists and medical disciplines, for the planning and deactivation of defibrillators as requested.

Work independently without medical supervision in all areas of both non-invasive and invasive Cardiology.

To assist in the line management for the physiology team by participating in the appraisal process for junior members of the team, identifying training and development needs

Knowledge and skills

Provide and receive complex technical information and interpret results for the care of cardiology patients and is a source of expert advice to patients, relatives and other healthcare professionals

Clinical supervision of students and junior trained staff within the team

Work unsupervised and to follow professional guidelines and protocols within the department

If the candidate has EP experience then there would be an encouragement to maintain these skills at a tertiary centre, one day per week.

Information

Input data into computerised systems and maintains patients records to ensure accuracy

Maintain the pacemaker and ICD database, including audit data

Maintain and develops systems for remote follow up of devices as required

To assist & to maintain the box change service for all device patients

Finance

To be aware of budgetary restrictions, and ensures appropriate selection of complex highly expensive devices

Ensures equipment is kept safe and trials products and equipment as required

Managerial

Attend regular updates on equipment and technical changes, and organises equipment training for physiology staff for cath lab and pacing equipment including programmers

Participate in CPD and other developmental activities

Make recommendations which impact on own area this may involve new ways of working

Research

Undertakes research and development within the department particularly during pacemaker and ICD follow up studies.

General

Undertakes any additional duties as deemed necessary directed by the Principal Physiologist
