Carfax College are currently looking for Invigilators & Scribes, to support us with the upcoming board examinations, taking place throughout May & June 2023.

Job description

We are currently looking for well organised and flexible invigilators and scribes to support the College examination officer during an exam session, taking place in our College.

The position is part time on a casual basis, to meet our examination schedule throughout May and June.

Candidates must possess excellent organisational skills, confidence and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Duties of the Invigilator

  • The role of the invigilator is supervise examinations and ensure that guidelines and regulations, for the integrity and security of examination papers and procedures, are followed during an examination session.
  • Invigilators are required to report to the Examinations Officer at least 15 minutes before the start of each examination session;
  • Invigilators should ensure they are fully familiar with any instructions for the conduct of examinations, and be aware of any pupils who require assistance;
  • Laying out of the name cards on each desk according to the pre-printed seating plan, and collect at the end of the examination;
  • Record examination start and finish times on the notice board so that all pupils can see these clearly;
  • Overseeing the orderly entry of pupils into the exam room ensuring pupils find their correct positions;
  • Open exam paper packets and answer books, and distribute them accordingly, ensuring each pupils has the correct paper;
  • Ensure pupils hand in equipment which is not allowed;
  • Assist any pupils who might need further clarification or assistance, as the instructions are read out;
  • Provide a positive and calm environment for the pupils at all times;
  • Assist with completion of the attendance register informing the Examinations Officer of any absentees;
  • Invigilators must be constantly vigilant during the examination and should not engage in conversation with other invigilators unless necessary for the smooth running of the examination;
  • Provide a positive and calm environment for the students at all times;
  • Ensuring that all pupils remain completely focused on their own work;
  • If necessary, escort candidates to the toilet;
  • Report to the Examinations Officer any suspicious breach of examination rules;
  • At the end of the examination collect question papers and answer books, keeping papers in the prescribed order;

Duties of the Scribe

  • The scribe is responsible for providing written / typing records from a pupil’s personal dictation, during an examination.
  • The scribe must be able to draw or add to maps, diagrams and graphs strictly in accordance with the pupil’s instructions;
  • If the pupil is taking a design paper a scribe will only be permitted to assist with the written parts of the paper;
  • The scribe must abide by the regulations since failure to do so could lead to disqualification of the candidate;
  • The scribe must immediately refer any problems in communication during the examination to the invigilator, who will report back to the examinations officer;
  • The scribe cannot give factual help to the pupil, advise which questions to answer, when to move onto the next question, or indicate when the answer is complete;
  • The scribe may, at the candidate’s request, read back what has been recorded.

Salary & Contract

Salary: £15.00 GBP per hour

Hours: Flexibility in hours will be needed during exam season

Contract term: Part Time, Casual

Responsible to: Exam Officer
