Reporting to – President, International Production, Sony Pictures Television

Overview

International Production oversees all television production outside of the US for SPT. Over the last five years, the business has been refocused around UK drama and reduced its production footprint in Europe and been rewarded with exponential growth. For the next period, focus will be on maintaining SPT’s position in the UK drama market, including growing an in-house studio capability, maximising opportunities in Europe for English language co-productions and re-energising SPT’s non-fiction capabilities in the UK and Europe.

The Head of Europe and UK is a new role reporting directly to the President of International Production. Their objective will be the continued growth of SPT’s business in the UK and Europe, working on a day to day basis with SPT’s production labels, assisting with the development, selling and execution of projects; working collaboratively with colleagues in Distribution, BA and Finance on creating funding models for projects; negotiating directly as appropriate with buyers; building SPT’s In-house studio capability and, along with SPT’s Corporate Development team, working on long term strategies, including acquisitions, for sourcing new opportunities for growth in Europe and the UK.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Day to day engagement with SPT’s production labels, both majority and minority, in assisting the development, funding, selling and execution of projects.
  • Fulfilling board role and responsibilities as appropriate and informed oversight of all productions.
  • Direct management of SPT’s international Studio operations and European Co-Productions business, actively sourcing opportunities to build production for hire for US studio projects and third-party clients as well as original projects.
  • Management of SPT International Productions Operations team.
  • Establish an innovative and engaged culture within the wider Production team.
  • Lead and motivate a strong team through mentoring, coaching, feedback and learning & development opportunities.
  • Act as central point of contact for the determination of all funding models for projects, working collaboratively with colleagues in BA, Finance and Distribution.
  • Where appropriate, engaging directly with buyers on licence negotiations.
  • Actively engage in identifying talent and/or companies for acquisition or partnership in UK and Europe, in both scripted and non-scripted genres, and work in collaboration with the Corporate Development team on building investment propositions.
  • Facilitate and collaborate to create meaningful interchange between other divisions within Sony, including TVD, US Studio, Sony Non-Fiction, PlayStation, Sony Music.
  • As a member of the International Production Senior Management Team, actively involved in MRPs, annual budgeting and delivery of the division’s financial targets.
  • Foster an innovation mindset, demonstrating a willingness to take measured risks.
  • Pro-actively deputising for the President where required.

Skills and Experience

  • Senior executive - typically with a minimum of 15 years’ experience in television production, including at least 8 years in a senior management role.
  • An established network of existing relationships with UK broadcasters, creatives and industry figures.
  • Hands-on experience of working in a Production environment with demonstrable, practical involvement in funding, editorial, commissioning and other challenges and opportunities that arise within Production.
  • Proven management skills, including P&L responsibility.
  • Proven ability to manage complex behaviours and situations.
  • Experience of spotting, nurturing and developing talent people management skills to handle complex internal organisations.
  • Team builder with strong leadership and management abilities, understanding the importance of team culture & values and with demonstrated success & comfort level working within an international environment.
  • Experience of coaching & developing direct reports, providing regular & consistent development feedback.
  • Act collaboratively at all times and build successful partner relationships.
  • Pro-active self-starter, resourceful and self-reliant.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity in a dynamic, changing, commercial environment. Experienced in leading change and aligning key stakeholders. Motivating and guiding others through times of transition & reinvention.
  • Sound judgement: making timely and informed decisions, often against challenging deadlines and competing perspectives.
  • Used to working with creatively focussed colleagues in a high pressure but friendly and informal environment and balancing inspirational demands with practical deliverables.
