Job description
To lead / assist the waste team in providing an efficient waste collection service including hazardous and infected waste in accordance with national legislation and Trust policies. Duties include the collection of waste bags and laundry, creation of rosters, arranging the collection of waste with the nominated contractors and collation of data, liaising with Infection Prevention and Control, Hotel Services Managers and Ward and Departmental Managers.
Provide effective input in to the work of the Trust, to support the achievement of our vision and values.
The main duties of the role include but are not limited to:
Supervise the various staff members ensuring that the duties and tasks are performed to required standards and schedules
To provide and receive routine information
To inform work colleagues and to inform the Waste and Recycling Manager of any issues that may affect day to day services
To supervise the delivery, collection and disposal of refuse, laundry and clinical waste from wards and departments in line with compliance and budgetary requirements
Organise rotas to ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained 365 days a year, including arranging cover as and when required and ensuring cover is supplied from suitably qualified and immunised staff
Liaise with wards and departments including catering and domestic services to resolve any day to day problems that may arise, referring on to the Waste and Recycling Manager any that cannot be resolved
To assist in any waste audits, internal and external, carried out where required
Bring to the attention of the management team any issues that may adversely affect the provision of a high quality waste collection service
Ensure that risk assessments and operating procedures for waste related work are in place and are reviewed at least annually making changes where appropriate with liaison with the Waste and Recycling Manager
Ensure all work is carried out to the appropriate standard and following the department’s procedures, including the appropriate use of PPE

To act as Team Supervisor for the Environmental Portering Team, supervise the various staff members ensuring that the duties and tasks are performed to required standards and schedules, to provide and receive routine information to inform work colleagues and to inform the Waste and Recycling Manager of any issues that may affect day to day services.
To supervise the delivery, collection and disposal of refuse, laundry and clinical waste from wards and departments in line with compliance and budgetary requirements.
Organise rotas to ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained 365 days a year, including arranging cover as and when required and ensuring cover is supplied from
suitably qualified and immunised staff.
Organise cover for extra duties as and when required.
Be a first level trainer for all items of equipment used in the waste collection service e.g. electric tug vehicles, compactors and balers.
Problem solve situations regarding the collection frequency and timing and service cover provided to the end user.
Liaise with wards and departments including catering and domestic services to resolve any day to day problems that may arise, referring on to the Waste and Recycling Manager any that cannot be resolved.
To assist in any waste audits, internal and external, carried out where required.
Bring to the attention of the management team any issues that may adversely affect the provision of a high quality waste collection service.
Plan own work and that of the team to ensure the agreed service level is maintained at all times.
Have a good understanding of the requirements of HTM 07-01 Safe Management of Healthcare Waste
Ensure that risk assessments and operating procedures for waste related work are in place and are reviewed at least annually making changes where appropriate with liaison with the Waste and Recycling Manager.
Ensure all work is carried out to the appropriate standard and following the department’s procedures, including the appropriate use of PPE.
Ensure that waste is sent for disposal in a safe and legal manner
Ensure that all waste related paperwork is correctly filled in and signed as required by Environmental Legislation, and that all paperwork is appropriately stored and available for
inspection.
Undertake yearly appraisals with the Waste and Recycling staff
Ensure that training of Environmental Services Porters is maintained and up to date
To liaise with other work colleagues and prioritise workload
To provide data on spreadsheets to show activity as required and directed by the Waste Manager
Undertake back to work interviews
Carry out first check of all timesheets of the Environmental Services Porters.
Monitor attendance, time keeping and performance ensuring that conduct that is outside of acceptable standards is brought to the attention of the individuals concerned following the appropriate Trust policies and procedures.
Be the first line in dealing with disciplinary matters, ensuring that serious or persistent issues are reported to senior management in a timely fashion.
To ensure all hazards or equipment faults are reported and rectified
Ensure all waste equipment (e.g. compactor/baler) servicing frequencies are maintained as required by the manufacturer
Maintain sufficient stock of waste related consumables and raise purchase requisitions for consumables.
Undertake daily audits of all external waste areas to ensure they are functional and clean.
Ensure that the external areas of the site, including the waste bay is maintained to a high standard of cleanliness.
Undertake all training as necessary to enable satisfactory and competent completion of role.
Maintain high standards of personal presentation and hygiene during the performance of duties
Flexibility in areas of work, as prescribed for the departmental needs.
All duties will be carried out in accordance with the Departmental instructions, Trust Policies and Procedures and Health & Safety Policy.
Maintain good working relationships with end users of the service and suppliers.
Assist the management team in developing the service and be prepared to recommend and initiate changes.
Assist with the recruitment and the induction and orientation of new staff, providing practical training and support to the team.
Carry out general waste collection duties as and when required
Ensure all collections of waste are completed and checked and are compliant with legislation for onward transport.
Ensure that consignments of sensitive waste are notified to the clinical waste management company and Waste and Recycling Manager and the appropriate paperwork completed.
Any other work commensurate with the post or as requested by the Line Manager. These duties and responsibilities may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Directorate and in particular the post holder may be required to provide support to other areas within the department as required and to carry out any relevant duties that may be requested.
