Role
The Scrum Master is ultimately accountable for optimising the Development Team, ensuring impediments to success are removed, and Scrum values and principles are understood and enacted to deliver maximum return on investment.
The Scrum Master coaches and supports – rather than managing and delegating – and facilitates Scrum events as needed. They improve the productivity of the Team by facilitating the Scrum Framework and acting as a firewall to protect them from distractions, enabling them to focus on delivering quality work.
The Scrum Master helps the Product Owner understand long-term product planning in an empirical control environment, and how to produce clear, concise Product Backlog items. They will ensure the vision, goals and Product Backlog is communicated to and fully understood by the Development Team.
Responsibilities
- The Entry Level Scrum Master supports the Product Owner in the following ways:
- Finding techniques for effective Product Backlog management
- Helping the Scrum Team understand the need for clear and concise Product Backlog items, clarified by Backlog Refinement and Definition of Ready
- Understanding product planning in an empirical environment
- Ensuring the Product Owner knows how to prioritise the Product Backlog to maximise value
- Understanding and practising agility
- Facilitating Scrum events as required

The Scrum Master supports the Development Team in the following ways:*

Coaching the Team in self-organisation and cross-functionality, and any other Scrum principles that are not fully understood or adopted
- Helping the Development Team to create high-value products
- Removing impediments to the Development Team’s progress
- Facilitating Scrum events as required
- Coaching the Development Team in organisational environments in which Scrum is not yet fully adopted and understood
- Helping the team to organise meetings, events, workshops, conferences
- Focusing on the growth and development of the team
- Shielding the team from actions and behaviours that are unhelpful to the Team
- Sharing information amongst the Team and the organisation, combined with the effort to ensure that work is transparent
- Searching for unreported/undiscovered impediments to be resolved before the Development Team are impeded
- Finding metrics which will be effective for the Team to track in business, performance and technical contexts
- Searching for training, knowledge and tools that will support the Team in upskilling and delivering increased levels of quality and productivity
- Helping the Team to prepare effective Definitions of ‘Done’ and ‘Ready’

Helping those outside the Scrum Team to understand which of their interactions and behaviours with the Scrum Team are helpful, and working to change those which aren’t
- Helping employees and stakeholders understand and enact Scrum and empirical product development
- Causing and supporting change to increase the productivity of the Scrum Team
- Working with other Scrum Masters to increase the effectiveness of the application of Scrum in the organisation
- Identifying and mapping the Value network within the organisation for optimisation and the removal of bottlenecks
