Your role: The EHS Officer is part of the UK EHS team and is responsible for working with all staff and contractors across all UK Sites in order to ensure that we strive to maintain safety as a core value and keep all our people injury-free. The EHS officer will also have a key role to play as part of our UK and Global Sustainability initiatives to help us attain our challenging and rewarding objectives to help the planet as we continue on our ambitious growth journey.
Key responsibilities:
- Liasion with external goverment agencies (e.g. UK HSE and SEPA) in order to ensure ongoing compliance with legal EHS obligations.
- Liasion with internal Corporate global EHS functions to ensure compliance with objectives
- To act in a facilitative, advisory role to all staff and contractors to support with training, advice and assistance in order to ensure a safe injury-free work environement
- To assist in implemenation of both short and longer term commitments with regard to EHS to help the company meet and exceed standards with regard to safety within the organisation.
- To facilitate in conjunction with managers and supervisors the identifcation of hazards and mitigation of risk within the workplace via effective systems, training, engagement and awareness.
- To offer suitable advice and guidance to staff within the organisation on
- Safe Systems of work
- Interpretation of legal requirements in key, specific areas (e.g. Biological safety)
- To devise and implement effective monitoring systems to assist in the evaluation and improvement of EHS performance within the organisation
- To aid with internal and extenal reporting requirements for EHS performance data
- To promote EHS awarenes, identify needs and recommendations throughout the organisation
- Aid and support investigation of any compliance contraventions, incidents or accidents along with recommendation and implemenation of any corrective actions
- To continually monitor external sources for relevant information on legistaltive and/or macroenvironmental changes which will affect the EHS strategy and objectives of the organisation
- To participate in and help local and global Sustainability teams to identify and implement energy and carbon footprint improvement initiatives
- Liasion with external suppliers and service providers as required.
Education:
- Degree, or equivalent, in a scientific or technical subject
- Training/qualification by a professional body (NEBOSH, IOSHH) in EHS. [further training will be provided as required]
- Proven experience in a labratory and/or scientific environment
- Working with external government EHS agencies (e.g. UK HSE, SEPA)
- Practical knowledge of hazard and risk management
- Experience of specific hazardous materials (e.g. biological materials, clinical waste) beneficial.
- Effective communication, engagement and presentation skills at all business levels with stakeholders and staff
- Good working knowledge of EHS legistaltion and legal requirements
- Good planning and organisational skills
- Problem solving and root-cause investigative skills
- Competent IT skills
