IN SHORT
Do you possess English or Maths knowledge and qualifications and think you could engage prison-based learners with interesting and innovative lessons?
Perhaps you are an experienced private tutor but would now like the opportunity for larger group teaching and working as part of a wider team?
Perhaps you are an experienced school teacher looking for a change of setting or the freedom to work all year as opposed to term time?
Do you like working in a challenging but rewarding environment where each day is different and time flies?
Milton Keynes College Group at HMP Elmley are seeking innovative English and Maths Teachers to work with a diverse group of learners delivering Functional Skills level sessions. The College are currently looking for candidates interested in variable/ad-hoc and permanent hours, who are keen to explore Prison Education at HMP Elmley or other nearby prisons that we work with (HMP Swaleside & HMP Standford Hill also on the Isle)
Prison education runs all year round, all day Monday-Thursday and until lunchtime on a Friday. Delivery hours vary slightly prison to prison but full days are split across 2 long lessons (Morning and Afternoon).
Milton Keynes College are offering potential candidates who possess suitable skills/experience the opportunity to visit prison for an open event. This will allow candidates to experience the environment and find out more about the day-to-day regime and expectations.
Please note – Any visit will be invitation only and subject to maximum numbers
MK College will treat all applicants fairly and with respect, irrespective of their background, disability or any other individual characteristic. We particularly encourage applications from people with backgrounds which are currently under-represented within Milton Keynes College. All offers made to successful candidates are subject to satisfactory outcomes to a range of pre-employment checks including a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS). In addition, security clearance is required for all prison services positions up to Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) level.
ABOUT HMP Elmley…
HMP Elmley serves the local courts in Kent so the majority of prisoners (55%) are awaiting a court appearance or to be transferred to another prison.
The Education Department works closely with our prison colleagues to take a holistic view of each learner and provide them with the initial starting points to support them on their next steps. This can be helping them to read or speak English, providing them with basic health and safety or food safety so they can secure employment - whether that be within the prison or on release. Time is spent understanding the men’s learning, supporting where there may be barriers to this and providing pastoral support as they engage with education in a prison. Courses include English and Maths Functional Skills (Entry 2 to Level 2), ESOL Catering and IT. This is complemented by a range of courses available through distance learning at level 3 and beyond e.g. Open University, A Levels and BTEC level 3.
In the department we believe the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge will help our learners to end their offending behaviour. We engage the hardest to reach learners and encourage them to take pride in their own education and self-development. As a department, we endeavour to inspire learners to achieve and for some, attain their first significant qualifications. If you believe that you can inspire and reach challenging individuals then we would like to hear from you!
