Job Summary
This Engineering Technician position will work the rapidly growing dynamic team of professionals in DDOT’s Traffic Engineering & Safety Division (TESD). As a member of the TESD team, this position will be a key contributor in bringing transformative change to the Nation’s Capital by advancing bus priority projects, protected bicycle facilities, Vision Zero enhancements, and complex multimodal traffic signal operations. This will make an immediate impact on the safety and mobility of our transportation network and help make DC’s Vision Zero and MoveDC goals a reality.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position works with a multi-disciplinary team, including technicians and engineers, who are ensuring compliance with local and federal regulations.
The incumbent will review/oversee installation, operation and maintenance of engineering and related traffic control devices; review and interpret drawings, plans and specifications; develop cost data related to proposed designs and devices; support the implementation of recommended engineering counter-measures from traffic safety investigations; apply a wide range of construction engineering techniques, practices, requirements etc., as required to provide comprehensive management advisory and related services on substantive matters; develop innovative, new, or modified work methods, approaches, or procedures; read a variety of plans to ascertain their conformance with relevant laws and regulations; represent the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) in discussions with ANC groups and others that may be directly concerned with traffic problems.
Qualifications and Education
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, at least one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.
Work Experience (Preferred): Seven years of relevant experience
Licenses and Certifications
IMSA Certification for Traffic Signal Technician certification is preferred.
The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver’s permit to operate motor vehicles.
Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician's quality of experience.
Working Conditions and Environment
The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts and requires that the incumbent stay continually alert and take special safety precautions.

Collective Bargaining Unit: (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit (union) represented by AFGE Local 1975 and you may be required to pay union dues through direct payroll deduction.
Position Designation: This position has been designated as security sensitive therefore the incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability and as such, incumbents of this position shall be subject to criminal background checks, background investigations, and mandatory drug and alcohol testing, as applicable.
Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as an essential employee position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual, Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter operations, food distribution, and communication. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early.
Incumbent is required to perform work after normal duty hours, attend community meetings, and may be required to be on standby duty status, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's permit.
