LABORATORY ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (2023-18811-F):
Bowhead is looking for a candidate to fill an Engineering Technician to support the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). The selected candidate will work in the Cold Spray Laboratory.
The Technician will be required to perform typical cold spray operations under supervision at first, but more independently as time progresses. Performs simple routine tasks under close supervision or from detailed procedures. Work is checked in progress or on completion. Performs one or a combination of such typical duties as:
- Assembles or installs equipment or parts requiring simple wiring, soldering, or connecting.
- Performs simple or routine tasks or tests such as tensile or hardness tests; operates and adjusts simple test equipment; records test data.
- Gathers and maintains specified records of engineering data such as tests, drawings, etc.; performs computations by substituting numbers in specified formulas; plots data and draws simple curves and graphs.
- Responsible for the operation and maintenance of various coating application systems under the guidance and instruction of principal investigators (PIs) and applicable standard operating procedures (SOPs). These systems include cold spray, high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF), plasma spray, thermal arc spray (TAS), the electro-discharge machining (EDM equipment).
- Responsible for the preparation and examination of metallographic samples. Metallographic preparation includes sectioning, mounting, grinding and polishing of metal/ceramic/composite samples. Other duties could include the maintenance of metallographic laboratory equipment.
- Perform mechanical tests such as tensile testing, fatigue testing and hardness testing and perform laboratory tests designed to characterize materials, following procedures established by PIs and will be responsible for acquiring data and assuring that the test data obtained is accurate. Reports will be required to be composed using the computer, therefore knowledge of word processing software is necessary.
- Technical knowledge and experience with using laboratory equipment such as various saws, sanders, grinders, grit blasters, lathes, etc. Ability to operate equipment that utilize various high-pressure gases such as helium, nitrogen and propane.
- Have basic laboratory skills and know how to handle chemicals and expensive/delicate instrumentation. Must maintain organization of the cold spray laboratory and supplies and keep the cold spray powder inventory up to date.
- Responsible for packing, shipping, and tracking of all Cold Spray shipments.
- Responsible for generating orders for lab supplies/tools/materials.
- Machining and fabrication of fixtures and parts.
- Running different testing applications (Instron, Hi-Watch, Surface Roughness).
- Processing of all powders used in Cold spray applications.
- Capable of becoming Radiation Safety Certified.
- Certified to operate a forklift.
- Ability to lift 50-pounds.
- Within one year, be able to:
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot two cold spray systems (VRC and CGT).
- Operate and maintain Poly Controls micro powder feeder.
- Run pneumatic and gas lines to various machines.
- Perform Helium trailer operation and maintenance.
- High school or Vocational Technical School at a minimum.
- Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
- Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
- Secret Clearance.
- Certification to operate Government and Team Bowhead Equipment and Vehicles.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time.
- Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must currently hold a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
