Engineering Shift Manager
Working hours: 08:30 - 16:00, Monday to Friday
Reports to: Chief Engineer
As the Engineering Shift Manager, you are responsible for managing all engineering activities onsite during the shift. You will manage and lead the department to ensure the team are able to meet any challenge. You will be on call to support the team on site should any issues arise outside of your working hours.
You will provide operational support to the Chief Engineer to deliver performance and engineering KPI’s. Escalating breakdowns in a timely manner and informing all stakeholders of the completion of work and timeframe on any escalated incident. You will work closely with the Engineering Management team to lead, manage and develop our people, processes, and systems to deliver a reliable and stable performance of the Engineering function.
Key Duties:
Forward Thinking
- Manage the teams’ working the shift utilising the Engineering Supervisor to ensure all planned work for each day is completed.
- Manage all CI engineering projects for your shift ensuring that all engineers and apprentices have 1 live project.
- Accountable for the GDPR regulations on the storage and maintenance of engineering data / reports / statistics / information. Information to be filed efficiently, being up to date, consistent, clearly defined and easily retrievable. Where appropriate set up record keeping systems, both manual and computerized which allow the team to review its progress and effectiveness.
- Challenge current processes and practices, with a view to improve
One Team
- Managing the development of the apprentices from pre-qualification supporting their learning journey in conjunction with apprenticeship provider ensuring work on site supports their qualification.
- Managing the development of the Engineers and Engineering Supervisors as part of department succession plans.
- Liaising with the Engineering Planner to support with the day-to-day activities and ensure all spare parts are made available where required.
- Mentor and support your team and ensure targets/KPI’s are clearly communicated, understood and achieved.
- Ensure all your team members are trained to complete the tasks required on site and arranging any necessary external training with the Learning & Development Team.
- Attend all daily production meetings and in your absence ensure the Engineering Supervisor picks up your role in these meetings.
- Managing all aspects of each team members employee life cycle from recruitment, absence, appraisal, performance, disciplinary and grievance etc.
- Lead by example, championing the FOOD behaviours and embedding these within your team.
- Ensure the engineering training matrix is up updated and audit ready.
- Build a portfolio of workshop tool talks and train them out on a regular basis.
Ownership
- Ensure engineers and contractors apply Health and Safety and Food Safety standards to all work undertaken and ensure engineering standards are upheld.
- Ensure all machinery/equipment meets site standards and all sub conditions are dealt with or escalated accordingly.
- Manage excellent housekeeping standards across all engineering areas.
- Responsible for all accident investigations and ensuring near miss reports are carried out to company standards.
- Be proactive on company standards and lead by example ensuring all the team follow the rules of the site and correctively coaching any areas of concern.
- Oversee the Site Services Supervisor to ensure all Permits are correct and the standards are maintained so all staff and contractors are working in a safe manner.
Driven
- Responsible for the management of excellent housekeeping standards across all engineering areas.
- Communicate effectively across all levels of management and all departments in relation to any engineering activities and breakdowns.
- Accountable for the achievement of agreed KPI’s including, PPM, Downtime, Reactive maintenance, Control of Budgets and Costs, Control of Capital Expenditure and Costs, Projects and Critical Path Adherence, Training and Development of all engineers.
- Be active in discussions and drive forward second nature initiatives.
- Manage the Engineering Supervisors to ensure audit compliance across all engineering standards
- Manage the team to maintain and improve services, plant, and machinery to ensure productive capability of the plant is optimised and improved for the ever-changing needs of the business.
Key Competencies:
· Minimum of NVQ 3 or equivalent qualification (preferable a HND level).
· A time served Engineering Manager with several years’ management experience within a fast-paced food manufacturing environment.
· Previous experience of FMCG manufacturing (preferably food related)
· Proven track record of managing large teams
· Qualified in or with extensive experience of CI processes
· Knowledge of continuous improvement tools and techniques
· Experience of health and safety
· Management of quality systems
· Ability to interact with high profile customers

Requirements, Experience and Person Specification:
- Level 3 in H&S; either NEBOSH, IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent
- All relevant risk assessments and safe working procedures are reviewed and to current standards
- Hazards and near miss reporting training
- Accident investigation training
