Job description

We are proud to be One Team at East Midlands Railway (EMR). We are passionate about keeping people safe, delighting our customers, doing the right thing and putting customers at the heart of our sustainable railway for the East Midlands. With over 2,300 employees, our people are the reason we are so successful and the Fleet Production team make a crucial contribution to this. Six times accredited as a Top Employer, we value our people and are dedicated to making sure that everybody feels empowered to bring their authentic self to work. We have an exciting opportunity to work at #TeamEMR as an Engineering Production Manager.

At EMR we want to proactively embrace diversity across our workforce and recognise that we are under-represented in terms of females and ethnic minority groups. We’re therefore taking positive steps to promote a positive and inclusive culture; we welcome applications from those that identify with these groups to better represent our communities.

As Production Manager, you will be directing and motivating fleet production staff at Derby Etches Park depot to ensure EMR fleets are maintained, repaired, and cleaned in line with fleet performance requirements and maintenance goals. Through taking ownership of KPIs and improvement initiatives, you will also champion a clean, safe, and productive working environment that will motivate teams to deliver work on time and to quality and budget requirements.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and delivering the required fleet production output, maintenance regimes and materials to enable timely, safe, functional, and clean trains into service daily
  • Maintaining a highly visible approach to health, safety, and environmental performance at the depot through coordinating and supporting QHSE activities
  • Creating and maintaining the depot operations plan, including resources/infrastructure planning
  • Producing quality reports to communicate appropriate information to the technical engineering team related to repeat defects and fleet improvement initiatives
  • Developing contingency plans in response to issues impacting production delivery, quality, productivity, or cost
  • Implementing production process improvements to ensure that the projected performance improvement in terms of planning, KPIs and budget are achieved
  • Working with supporting functions (e.g. HR, Safety, Finance) to ensure production teams are resourced and equipped to deliver maintenance plans
  • Carrying out investigations and producing reports related to safety and employment relations matters where required
  • Developing and maintaining the employee engagement action plan, ensuring that depot communications are consistent, timely and responsive to engagement KPIs

To be successful in this role you will be:

  • A great all-round communicator, verbal and written
  • Able to direct and motivate others towards shared goals
  • Skilled in conflict management and resolution
  • A self-starter, comfortable with making decisions and taking action in response to changing situations
  • IT literate, able to use Microsoft Office to produce reports, trackers and presentations
  • Financially aware and familiar with contract administration

And you will have:

  • A recognised Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent engineering experience assessed to recognised standards
  • A NVQ supervisory/management qualification; or equivalent experience at supervisory or managerial level
  • A proven track record of managing and motivating a team and delivering KPI performance management in an engineering production environment, preferably in rail
  • Ideally, you will be knowledgeable in traction and rolling stock maintenance standards and techniques. Personal Track Safety certification would also be beneficial, but not essential as we can organise this for the successful candidate.

As well as a competitive salary, we’ll also offer you:

  • An excellent defined benefit pension scheme
  • Up to 34 days’ holiday per year
  • Flexible working hours with regular home working
  • Free First Class duty travel on the EMR network
  • Free standard leisure travel on the EMR network and Train Operating Companies under Abellio & LNER
  • 75% discount on national leisure travel (inc partner and dependants)
  • Friends and Family discounted tickets on the EMR network
  • Various training opportunities
  • Employee benefits portal with access to generous discounts, Cycle 2 Work Scheme …and many more!

Our depot operates 24/7. Although you will usually be working days (06:30 start), occasional working outside daytime hours may be needed to respond to incidents or other operational needs.
