Description
You will learn the skills to do the job during your time spent working in our workshops and the time that you spend in college. You will gain experience of working in our modern workshops and get first-hand experience of our cutting edge working practices; you will be supported during your apprenticeship by experienced and friendly work colleagues.
We have a requirement to recruit two apprentices, for our Croydon site. A fitter is responsible for the mechanical fitting, assembly and strip and survey and test of components in our Voith product ranges which cover a wide range of industries from oil and gas to marine, commercial vehicles, and rail. You will learn the skills to do the job during your time spent working in our workshops and the time that you spend in college, ensuring that you learn how to maintain a clean and safe working environment at all times.
You will gain experience of working in our modern workshops and get first-hand experience of our cutting edge working practices; you will be supported during your apprenticeship by experienced and friendly work colleagues who will support you as you progress through the stages of you apprenticeship with us. On successful completion of the apprenticeships, you will gain an NVQ level 3 and will have a solid platform to develop within our business.
In the initial 24 months period the successful applicant will learn the key skills to become a mechanical / electro fitter. You will be given the opportunity to;
- Develop practical and theoretical knowledge both at college and within the workshop at Voith.
- Working safely and efficiently in an engineering environment
- The use interpretation and communication of technical information
- Hand fitting and machining techniques.
- Maintenance and testing of mechanical components. Electrical and mechanical science
- Mathematics for engineers.
Mandatory Entry requirements: GCSE grade C/4 in Mathematics and English Language, plus two other GCSE’s at grade C/4 or equivalent.
Training to be provided
During your apprenticeship you will attend Kingston College for your off the job training.
Engineering Technicians in the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Sector are predominantly involved in highly skilled, complex work and must, as a minimum be able to:
- Apply safe systems of working
- Make a technical contribution to either the design, development, quality assurance, manufacture, installation, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, systems, processes, or services
- Apply proven techniques and procedures to solve engineering/manufacturing problems
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in communicating both technical and non-technical information
- Have a commitment to continued professional development
Learning takes place mainly during employment through the development of on the job skills, supported by college tuition Both the on and off job elements of the Apprenticeship lead to nationally recognised qualifications.
Things to consider
As our organisation works in the supply of rail components, this work is deemed as safety critical all employees who work in this area are subject to a drug and alcohol test as part of pre-employment and could be part of random selection process for testing thereafter.

Future prospects
Completion of the Apprenticeship is designed to be recognised by relevant Professional Engineering Institutions at the appropriate level of professional registration (EngTech). In the case of the Military specific pathway in the Aircraft Maintenance Fitter/Technician Standard, professional competence will be recognised by the Military Independent Assessment Authority (MIAA). A number of our Engineering Apprentices go on to complete the HNC and HND we offer at Kingston College.
