REQ ID: 115182
JOB TITLE: Engineer, Weights Engineering
SALARY: £34,100 - £45,100
POSTING END DATE: 9th May 2023
LOCATION: Gaydon
We’re re-examining our vehicles and what a vehicle means in the emerging world of automation, connectedness, electrification and the shared economy. New ideas, new technology, and new approaches to mobility are our business. Join a team of next generation thinkers.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Department: Vehicle weight directly affects CO₂ and Fuel Economy and has a significant impact on delivering driven attributes such as performance, ride, handling, etc. We are part of Vehicle Engineering and are responsible for all JLR vehicles’ mass properties. We own vehicle weight throughout the PCDS process.
Strategy: Benchmarking and futuring of our competitors, both at vehicle and system level and subsequent target setting for all our products.
Delivery: Tracking status against targets. Helping to ensure correct system/commodity/architecture strategy is employed through the engineering phase. We promote Optimisation, Integration, Material, Architecture and Technology choices to deliver the best engineering solutions for weight. We prepare Loading Charts and mass properties parametric models throughout the engineering process to support CAE during the virtual phase and to enable correlation of physical prototypes during validation.
Launch: Support validation of part and vehicle weight by measurement. Prepare mass data for the vehicle type approval for Masses & Dimensions including supporting the witness test with the relevant authorities. Analyse production data to monitor weight creep and to support on-going model year in-cycle changes.
Key responsibilities: Weight is one of the biggest contributors towards improving CO2 and Fuel Economy, so is rapidly becoming an extremely important attribute for both the customer and the industry.
This role is an opportunity for a capable Engineer to learn about Attribute Management through the subject of Mass Properties. The role is end to end, running from Target Setting in the Concept phase right through to validation at Verification Build and production capability from J1.This wide scope means there is opportunity to interact with many areas of the business. It will give you exposure to the wider engineering team in that it covers the whole vehicle. In terms of career development then this role will tick most of the boxes as learning about the technical side of this subject along with building contacts and relationships will give a good basis to go forwards. Historically our function has a good track record for developing future Leaders within Vehicle Engineering as a result of the knowledge, experience and visibility gained within the role.
Key Performance Indicators
Derivation of competitive targets.- Tracking vehicle status & reporting of status vs target in readiness for all gateways.
- Administering RMDV requirements management system as evidence of test compliance.
- Submission of Vehicle Loading Charts and Parametric models in line with programme timing.
- Production of Programme panel chart to demonstrate programme health for gateways.
- Production of certification data to enable homologation.
WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
Candidates will be required to conduct Verification of the weight for prototype and production vehicles by weighing them.- Reconciliation of vehicle weight between different derivatives and trim levels
- Provide assistance to Weight Attribute Leaders by population of loading charts and related documents.
- Project management of Vehicle Weight targets and deliverables, including future target setting and balancing
- Opportunity to Learn about Calculation of mass properties from geometry and from First principles.
Responsible for Coordination of Generation and maintenance of Vehicle Mass Properties models
